Just in case anyones interested in combining photography and telescopes, there's a lunar eclipse coming soon. August 28th, from 8:51AM-12:24AM GMT with totality between 9:50AM-11:20AM GMT (add 10 hours for AEST.)

http://science.nasa.gov/headlines/y2007/03aug_dreamyeclipse.htm

Edit: Errrmm... that should be deduct 10 hours for AEST. :-

Also Perseid meteor showers on the nights of 12 & 13 Aug (might be 11 & 12 in Oz). New moon on 12 Aug (11 Aug?) enhances visibility. As many as 100 flashes per hour.

Got the Lunar eclipse booked in :2tsup: Last partial eclipse I saw was when Halleys Comet left our solar system last century. The gas and dust tails were great to see that night.

Are the Perseid meteor showers for the northern hemisphere only?

I was listening to a bloke from the observatory this morning. Apparently it only appears to be a perseid meteor shower. The shower is because the Earth is passing through the dust from comet Tutt. The meteors will appear to come from near the horizon & you will probably have to be in a dark location to see them. (According to the observatory.)

Me thinks the time sequence is incorrect 8.51am GMT to 1224am is 20 hours thats longest eclipse known to man its ok I am dyslexic also.

if you add 10 hours to GMT you'll miss it we are 10 hours ahead which would make it about 10pm+ here

But thanks won't miss it a full moon on 28th a fantastic eclipse to see.
will we see a full snow dump

If so, your times would be the same as mine. Wouldn't they?

They appear to propagate from the constellation Perseus, hence the name. Just above your northern horizon, so not as spectacular as in the northern hemisphere. Dark sky of the new moon might help a bit, but it won't help me see the Southern Cross.:C

Two moons on August 27, 2007

*27th Aug the Whole World is waiting for.............*

Planet Mars will be the brightest in the night sky starting August.

It will look as large as the full moon to the naked eye. This will
culminate on Aug. 27 when Mars comes within 34.65M miles of earth. Be
sure to watch the sky on Aug. 27 12:30 am . It will look like the earth
has 2 moons. The next time Mars may come this close is in 2287.

??

Mars was at it's closest to Earth for the first time in yonks, some 50,000 years, on August 27 2003. It won't be any closer until August 28, 2287, although it does come fairly close to Earth every 26 months or so. (I think) Which makes this December the time of close approach, not August.

I don't exactly remember anyone wondering what that red moon was back in '03, do you? Although I was out there at the time, on the pointy end of my tellingscope looking for li'l green men waving at me. :)

Sounds like someone's a tad guilty of hyperbole....

Did anybody see any of the meteor shower over the weekend?

We were clouded out for most of it but the sky cleared for a while on Friday 10/8/7 so we went out for a look around midnight .

We saw several very small very fast ones, all seem to be coming from the north east.
I was too cold to stay out more than about 15 minutes & they were not spectacular but we did see at least 6 or 7 in that time.

The moon is bloody huge - if Mars (which is not that much bigger than the Moon) looked about the same size, then the damned thing is about to hit us, or at the very least we are in for an absolute humungus spring tide!! :D

I took this from my front porch on 27th May. It was mid afternoon at the time. Not very exciting but considering the camera was hand held at 30 zoom (10 optical x 3 digital), for a spur of the moment shot it wasn't too bad.

[bump]

Not looking good here, as it's overcast. :~ Not thick enough to block the moon, but enough to make in not worth the effort of breaking out the telescope or camera. [sigh]

Hope things clear up really, really soon...

I've been out on the deck watching it through binoculars... clear as here, and cool. The blood moon looks like an egg without the shell, sort of yolky with a red cast. Can't budge the kids off the TV though...

Just been up on the roof, SWIMBO saying "get down you might fall after 2 bottles of home brew". Reply, "bullsh**t", retort " you got to finish the renovation first".

Absolute magic. Unusual, never seen anything like it. Back up there again! Stuff the TV.

Just went out to a geterhing that the local astronomy club held. They had a heap of telescopes out for public use and also guys taking all about the stars etc.

Saw the eclipse with the kids and had a great time! Unfortunately my camera can't won't take any good photos:(

After my bump, the clouds just got heavier and heavier... until nothing was visible in that half of the sky. To rub salt in, the other horizon has been crystal clear all night! :~

Nice pics, Ianab! I guess I'll have to watch this one thru yours (and others) eyes...

It was bloomin cloudy here.

I watched with the kids on the back verandah. They had never seen an eclipse and this was timed right in the middle of idiot box time so I was quite happy to have them doing something more intelligent.

The sky was as clear as it gets around our place, not cold, bloody good night!

It was great!!! :) Started out a bit cloudy but cleared up beautifully. I've never seen a full moon eclipse before so it was very interesting to see how orangy-red the moon go. I tried to take some pictures but haven't had a chance to check them yet.

Great clear night LOML and daughter all sat in the backyard and watched it from the start till about 9.30
Sausage sandwhiches & cuppa
set up video got about 35 min's not bad would have been better if the flamin tripod hadn' been so much a pain in the $$^* it either was slipping out of position or wouldn't move when I needed to follow the moon.

Also set up the 35mm SLR will have to wait till I get the film (yep did it the old way) first time in many years

:C:~:~ the worst of it was bloody neighbours who kept walking outside to see how it was going firing up their auto flippin outside lights:doh: when lens was open had me mutering like Muttley frign fragn fuzzn

Had to look between the clouds, it was about 50% cover, but windy so they were moving past pretty quick. Might loose it for 5 mins, then see it for another 5 etc.
