My daughter just bought one from the Good Guys with the twin lens kit for $1075.00 + $59.00 for the CF card. Apparently they have them on special at the moment.

I recently bought a camcorder from Digital Rev Hongkong via Ebay and was very pleasantly surprised at their professionalism & service.

They do the EOS 400D with a basic 18-55 lens at $844 including postage. Or different packages of lenses, etc at varying prices, but all very well priced. THey bundle in free gifts, which I wrote off in advance, but was surprised to receive items which are of good quality.

They have a local agent for warranties, or postage paid repairs; though I've not tested this.

But all in all, I'd strongly recommend giving them a go. They have a website with reviews of high level stuff which seems to indicate that among the different photo shops (online or otherwise) they are probably among the more reputable ones in Hongkong.

My local Dick Smith Powerhouse had the Canon 400D for $999, with two lenses. 18-55mm and a 75-300mm. Great camera! Bought it just after Christmas. I've heard that there's a new Canon coming out, which is why the 400D is on special at lots of places.

The 450D is expected to hit the stores in April. Many shops will be reducing their stock of the 400 (and some still have 350's).

Just picked myself up a 400D with a 18-55 IS USM lens (not the std 18-55 kit lens) for $854.

Nikon and Pentax each have new additions to the entry level DSLR ranges also. So if 10MP is enough for you there should be some bargains around shortly.....

I recently bought a Nikon D300 from Digital Rev. They refund you the customs tax. They also cover any shipping costs back to HK for warranty repairs. 16000+ transactions on eBay. Customer service is helpful. 2-3 days for item to ship to Sydney. Free gifts with the auction (camera bag, lens cleaning kit, lens cleaning cloth, etc.) Overall, very satisfied with purchasing through them. The price is the lowest I saw around (even from USA) for the Nikon D300. Good luck with your purchase.

If you are looking at getting a 400D, work out what your photo requirements are first -

There are two lens 'kits' typically available with the 400D; there the two lens kit with the 18-55mm and 75-300mm, and then there is the single lens kit with the 17-85mm IS USM lens. The 'IS' stands for 'Image Stabilised'.

Buying the kit with the 17-85 is a cheaper option in my opinion, because:
1) It's cheaper in a kit (the lens itself sells for about $650 new or $350+ secondhand compared to paying about $150 secondhand for the 75-300).
2) It's image stabilised - this gives you the ability to hand-hold in darker environments without camera shake. This kind of makes up for the fact that most of the sub-$1,000 Canon lenses won't get faster than about f/4. (still doesn't give you really good background blur, but you can always fake than in Photoshop).
3) It's a short back focus "S" series lens, specifically for digital cameras - this means the focal length is about 35-160mm (in 35mm equivalent) which is a pretty good everyday walkaround lens.

If you are thinking of holding out for the 12 megapixel 450D, here are some major differences between the 350/400D cameras and the 450D.
It no longer uses a compact flash card - the 450 uses a SD card. So if you have a nice stack of 1 gig CF cards, they won't be all that much use.
The battery is a new type. If you have spares for your 350/400, they won't fit.
Accessories like the battery grip that was common across the 350/400 won't fit either.I'm half tempted to upgrade from my 350 to a 400 when the price comes down a bit more, as the 400 has a better menu system and a bigger screen...so if anyone here wants a 350D or is thinking of selling their 400D, drop me a line!
