View Full Version : Sanding Table

Hi All,

Made myself this sanding table which was going to place across 2 saw horses when I wanted to use it. I have limited room (where have I heard that before!) so SWMBO suggested I slide it under my main workbench (Duh! why didn't I think of that?). Anyway I used a couple of 500mm drawer slides as living in a country region I couldn't source anything heavier at the time.

I will probably change to heavier slides in the future but the photos give you the idea.

Cheers

great idea. I've been thinking of this one myself.

What does it look like inside or is it just empty?

I've seen various designs on the web. One has a 'V' bottom and draws from the end. Another used 40mm pvc in a square figure 8 with different sized holes (smaller near outlet, larger at back) to even up the airflow.

Figure 8 design :

I have another but can't find it at the moment.

Great job.
It is also on my to do list and in my main ducting I've already provided a branch line for it. Great idea for the sliding under the bench. Did you use ordinary peg board for it.

found it. Shop-Built Downdraft Table (http://woodcentral.com/shots/shot431.shtml) This is my preferred design with the sloping sides. But hows does yours go? Does it get all the dust around the sides?

Rockler even have a kit to make one. They even paint the surface with a anti-slip coating. Rockler (http://www.rockler.com/findit.cfm?page=10169&sid=AF998)

Stephen,

Your last link is the one I am thinking of building with the further refinement of countersinking the holes to aid in the suction.

Hi all,

Thanks for you comments.

Yes it is just a hollow box, so far it seems to be doing the job. I have only just built it so it has only had very limited use so far but does not seem to be hanging dust up in the corners.

The top is actually made from a sheet of perforated 12mm mdf that the previous owner of the house left behind when he moved. I guess the thickness of the sheet is the reason why I could make it with no inner frames for dust to get caught up on.

Thanks for the links fellas, @&#)!@# Now you've got me thinking about Mk II

Cheers all,

Great job.
Does "I'm very jealous" sound cliched?
Well I am.
I haven't even got a workshop other than under my house, complete with dirt floor and 5 foot centre brick piers to dodge. But Rome wasn't built in a day, o I'm adding this idea of yours to the growing list of "must do jobs"
Cheers

Thanks Jim,

I reckon you could cantilever a couple of benches between those 5 foot centres ;-).

Any workbench is better than no workbench. Dirt floors are a bit of a problem though. Particularly if they aren't level.

I must admit I've been there and done that. In the last house I owned I removed 22 trailer loads of dirt from under the house, put up a huge RSJ which allowed me to remove some piers, put up a brick retaining wall, concreted the floor and built my benches on the top of the retaining walls.

But,

Not Never Ever Ever No More!!!!! Nix, Niet, No!

Oh my aching back!!

Here's one I came across awhile ago: http://www.woodworkersworkshop.com/plansshare/air_filter_downdraft_sanding_table.htm

It doubles as an air filter and an outfeed table for your table saw. OK if you have the room. And a spare blower.

SilentC,

That one is a ripper! That is exactly what I would want to do if I had the room.

Love the way he has designed it to be his outfeed table as well.

And, looking at the pics, do you see all that lovely space around his table saw?

Ah Well! A boy can dream can't he?

You've read my mind. Everything you did I plan to do. Looks like my back is going to get worse before it gets better! Peter's (Sturdee) pics have inspired me and your description sounds like the picture I have in my mind.
I do have several dodgy brothers benches under there, and a sloping Dirt floor. The only dust extraction is natural draughts!

ps the multi language refusals sound pretty convincing though.
