Salt & Pepper grinders

G'Day all.
I have just started making salt & pepper grinders.
Some timbers eg. camphor laurel, have a very strong smell that could taint the salt or pepper.
What should I use to seal the inside of the grinders.

You can use "DE-waxed" shellac.If any of those woods (timbers) ;) are "oily",wipe the surface with alcohol just prior to applying shellac.

Wait till the smell of the shellac is gone before assembly.

A shellac containing wax will have its' own smell.

I have just finished my first two pepper mills .... the only suggestion that I can make is it may be possible to insert a pvc tube 25mm dia into the pepper storage area. This would keep a majority of the stored pepper off the raw timber. Then there is the problem of what the PVC will do to the pepper .... oh well you can try to use something else.

What about using some glass tube.

If wood is known for shrinking, twisting, and bending, (I know mine darn well is!!!) maybe glass would be my last choice for an insert. If even the smallest glass chip gets through the grinding mechanism it could cause some difficulties... Maybe a 2pac lacquer and patience. Merry Christmas (Eve) to all.
