Hi guys

Has anyone tried or got the Sphere Cutting Jig (http://vermec.tripod.com/id1.html) from Vermec's?

Ordered one today, will be about 2 weeks till I get it as Enzo has to make one up for me.

So in the meantime wouldn't mind hearing if anyone has used one and what it was like. If no one has, well then I guess I better do a review hey :2tsup:

I have a home made one that is very similar to your one. The critical part for me is the shape and sharpness of the tool bit. The rest of it is a no brainer.

I got one off Enzo about two years ago and it works a treat. The main thing is to rough turn to just over size before you use it. To turn and sand the back side I use my vacuum chuck but you can make a jamb chuck. The round cutter works really smooth and can give a very good finish. I use it to make full size baseballs for trophies. Value wise you would need to make a lot of balls as you know the jig is not cheap.
Have fun with your "balls" http://www.woodworkforums.com/images/icons/icon10.gif

I've never seen one, but it just sounds expensive. Like a patterning tool, I presume?

Thanks, Hughie, that's pretty nice! Looks like it'd be fun to use!

I have two models of the Vermerc Cphere cutting
one for the Vicmarc Lathe 175 and one for the 300.
The sphere cutting jig is very easy to use, does a very good finish if you do not take toomuch wood out at a time. This is made very easy thanks to the threading of the bolt used to adance the cutting edge.
It still leaves you a fairly robust piece of wood on the left hand side of the ball, but it's not difficult to finish the sphere.

Thanks for the feedback guys :2tsup: sounds like I haven't wasted any money then.

I won't be using it to turn a complete sphere more like 75% of a sphere as it will be used for the tops of the S & P mills most of the time.
