Hi. I bought a Record No52 woodworking vice at a jumble sale. Nice piece too. I need to fit some wooden false jaws to it, as it came without any. The problem is fixing the wooden jaws to the steel ones. There are two screw holes per jaw. I went through my big box of used screws to find something that would fit but drew a blank - which I think is a first. Does anyone know what the thread is? Also the size/gauge of the screw would be handy?

If it is some exotic type of thread that I wont get at Bunnings, then can you suggest where I might get some - I live in NW Sydney so somewhere around Parramatta or Lidcombe would be handy.

thanks
Arron

I just put silastic between the wooden bits and then done up the vice, works a treat.

Take your vice to a specialist nuts and bolts supplier and they will quickly be able to work out the bolts required.

How about emailing Record directly.

hi arron,
get yourself a set of thread gauges (dont know what the correct name is!) there like feeler gauges with different size teeth.
match one to your thread size and you have your answer.
probably your best bet of getting a set would be at a metal machinists shop. or second hand tools
hope you find the answer

Hi Arron,
Suggest you could try taking a sample bolt to:-

Mullings Fasteners
130 Dunning Ave
Roseberry

I use this co for all my specialist needs in fasteners (Corporate Purchasing) and they are probably the best in Sydney.

Alternatively try
Bakers Construction
Forge Street
Blacktown

The service is great but matching odd products is not always possible.

Drill it and tap it to a known size.

Arron, If you're in the Parramatta area you may want to check out a place called either "The Nut Factory" or "Lee Brothers" in North Parramatta. They are on Dunlop St on the jail side of Church St and have a good rep for finding or picking odd bolts, etc. Happy hunting.

The reason you won't find a fit is that Record vices come without threads so it looks like the previous owner cut the thread themselves. It may be that it actually is a common thread but it wasn't tapped well. If you assume that the tapping wasn't done to the standard that a record vice would normally be expected, maybe one of your screws may work after all.

Otherwise I agree with termite, get it retapped.

Thanks Guys. I'll just retap. If that doesnt work, some silastic will do it.
