My Mills are finally finished. I bought myself a Stihl MS660 with 25", 42" and 60" bars, and a heap of chain and accessories not long ago – see here (http://www.woodworkforums.ubeaut.com.au/showthread.php?t=67904). I wanted a small mill for the small bar, but expandable to suit the larger bars. I had a heap of tubing out back and decided on 2 simple frames, joined with lengths of tube, allowing the frames to move apart to suit the larger bar sizes.

I did post a WIP on the Arborist Forum, so if you are interested in the original plans and the various parts (auxiliary oiler etc) or the Q&A, you can check it out here (http://www.arboristsite.com/showthread.php?t=61853). I did get a lot of help from that forum, mostly from fellow Aussie members. I had a lot of fun making it, I certainly needed the welding practice.

I will be giving it a run soon on the smaller logs and a few semi-large burls (too big for bandsaw) I have at home – only a few a day, so as not to p_ss off the neighbours too much, after all it does run at 113 dBA. Hopefully I’ll also get to run the big beast on a big log or monster burl soon too. Now all I have to do is hire a storage shed for the timber, or get a bigger place, as I’ve run out of room to store it on my current suburban block.

Cheers

You've got a spare bedroom haven't you?:D Or maybe you could drain the pool and put a roof over it.:p

hey Neil! The mill looks great! So might you consider coming up the range to try it out on a few timber stands you spotted recently? :D:D

cheers

I still need the spare bedroom for sleeping, but there is already timber under the bed :U

In the pool, too much risk of the pool popping if drained long term, it would also leak water from pressure valve. But I had thought about using the pool filled with water and detergent before . Especially when I've spend $$$'s on chemicals and power for filter and only used it once in 12 months :~. The pool is another one of the X's ideas, I would never have put it in just for me.

Nah, I'm still a sucker for good looking timber, no matter how much I have :B:U
