I was wondering what is the best way to make a blank for wood turning from a small rough log. I'm talking about a peice of wood like maple that is about 12 to 15 inches in diameter and maybe 16 inches long. I want to be able to make the wood into small 1" x 1" x 4" blocks for turning fly rod reel seats. Thanks a lot for any info...

Bandsaw.
Mark on the end diameter (12 to 15 inches) the size blocks that you are after and then follow the lines.

I agree a bandsaw is invaluable, but mine won't cut anything like 12" diameter or 16" long - its an older 12" Paulcall and its cutting limit is about 4". I bought a Ryobi electric chain saw (350 mm blade, $129 on special) which is great for cutting irregular shaped log stock into roughly rectangular blanks that will fit into the bandsaw.

cheers
