well.
the cessnock woodturners have access to their shed now:U. so i thought i would go on up there to turn a jarrah bowl that was way to big for my lathe.

got there and they said - you can use the vl200....i was like "sweet!!!:2tsup:"

so i mount up my 340mm jarrah bowl at 230 rpm ( 6 speed lathe ) and it was awesome. no vibration, quiet as motor and runs true!!!:D got it round, then cranked up the speed to 500 odd...still no vibration and feels Fantastic to use. AND the tool rests are so easy to use compared to an mc900:cool:

i cannot wait untill i get my new lathe - i now realise how bad my mc900 really is ( i didnt think they were that bad:-- still good to start with:cool: and continue with untill you use a vicmarc:rolleyes: ).

pics will be up in the next week or so because i need to finish the inside - i ran out of time before i had to go:(...just needs some 1200+1500 grit EEE and shellawax.

cheers

ps...the shellawax cream seconds are pretty good. i used it on the outside of the bowl and geez, its got to be as good if not better than the normal stuff:2tsup: good mistake there neil:p:2tsup:

prozac

it just needs the inside finished:2tsup:..then piccies will come. - and because of its size, i dont know whether or not i can do it at home ( it would have to be outboard and my lathe is pretty much set up for pen turning atm )

it would be a great bowl, except there are a few borer holes which i think detract from the peice it self:(

I have been away from work for a couple of weeks. Last friday i checked my bank account to make sure my pay went in and there was $14,000 put in it.

Later that day a registered letter turned up to let me know there had been a staff resructure and my job was eliminated, so i was retrenched (thanks for the communication)

Do you think i should just go out and buy one (or maybe a stubby) or do you reckon getting another job should be a higher priority???:?:?:?

Hey Dj where have the control knobs gone?

I mounted mine in a box that I can placed where I like, did this as I quite often turn outboard and didn't like reaching around a spinning lump of wood to stop it or adjust the speed.

Stirlo there is a great Vicmarc Website, have a look at it.:2tsup:
The swing over the bed is such on the VL300 you wouldn't need to turn outboard.

If you feel the need to go ginormous the the VL175 is the go. it has a swivelling head and an outboard turning rig so that you are still turning in the same direction. The swing over the bed is such that it will handle most of what you want without going to out board.:;

Not necessarily right artme, sometimes you need to use the tailstock to support the blank. Have used a VL175 and have had the head moving with a large unbalanced piece when it was swivelled out, in the end it was mounted on VL300. Not saying its a crap lathe, but it does have its limitations as all lathes will, you just have to work out what those are and if you are willing to work within those limitations.

Also if you were to use a Bowl Saver, you are limited to 360mm dia whilst on a VL300 you can go up to 600mm dia.

When I looked at buying a lathe seriously, I looked at both the S1000 Stubby and the VL300 short and long bed and in the end I went with the VL300 short bed with an extension as I wanted to be able to turn 1200mm between centres.

Would have loved to have bought the Stubby as it is a very good machine but in the end it couldn't do one of the things that I wanted it to do.

Thanks for all the support and kind words. This really is a great place to be on.

The truth of the matter is i have been there 5 years and hated the last 3 1/2. Being over 50 and getting a job that paid as well is not easy but now i have to do that so really it was a favour they did me. Now i have to get another job and maybe my enthusiasm will return instead of going to work every day hating every minute of it.

Thanks again guys your thoughts really are appreciated.
