View Full Version : Laminated beams

I have been given a couple of offcuts of laminated beams as used in the building of houses.

There are two types. One with small, about 2-3 mm laminates like very thick pieces of plywood, and one with larger 30-40mm laminates. A couple of questions spring to mind.

Are they treated pine.

Are they suitacle for turning.

If so has anyone had either good or bad experience with these.

Any other thoughts would be appreciated.

Thanks

Lots of folks turn things out of laminations - you can even buy colourful laminations cut into turning blanks.

My very first turning was a mallet made from an offcut of 4x4 (a 2 pieces of 4x2 laminate), so, while I haven't turned the beam material you have on hand, I'd say sharpen your chisels and give it a go!

Then post pics here :-)

Cheers,
