Hi All,

Hermle instructions for the mechanical movements and the HB clock plans warn about resin deposits from certain timbers on mechanisms over time which can gum them up and essentialy stop them from working.

I was wondering whether there would be a similar effect from tung and similar oils if used inside the case??? I am going to use such oil over poly for my latest clock, do you think it is OK to do the inside of the case as well, or just poly to err on the side of caution? :? (Mechanisms can be very expensive to replace!!!)

Thanks

G'Day Swifty,
My mate who is a professional Horologist advised me when I built my first clock,
DO NOT use any oil based finishes inside the clock.
They collect dust and over time the fumes will sieze the movement.
I use wipe on Poly on the interior of my clocks but only where totaly necessary for looks, Also it is recomended 7 days min drying time before fitting the movement.
Here is a link to some info that might be of interest.
