acrylic acetate or acrylester

Hi all I am trying to source a small quantity of pure white and jet black acrylic acetate to use as pen blanks 15X15mm.and around 110mm log and about 6 of each non colour [ie only white and black] can anyone help please . I have asked at Carroll's and no luck :no::no:.The reason for plain {pure] is that I want to make a piano pen or 2 or 3 and maybe an accordian pen. By the way Jim C. was able to get me the tips for my teknatool gouge from woocut in his last order .:2tsup::2tsup: They don't finish their product off too well but [ like a lady] a kiss on the grinder and a light massage with a diamond hone and it purrs:D All the news for now cheers to all WW.Wally

Only place I know that stocks solid black acrylic blanks is Arizona Silhouette (http://www.arizonasilhouette.com/Berea_Hardwoods_Acrylics.htm) (AA-25) in the US and they don't ship os.

I have some white corian here, that may be an option. Other option is to do your own PR casting or speak nicely to someone who does.

I am about to start casting my own acrylic blanks and have purchased white and black pigment, but I don't know when (if ever) I'll be good enough to produce usable blanks:doh:

Hi WW, Corian is (I think) a tradename for an artificial terrazo used for kitchen benchtops. I obtained my blanks via a member of the IAP pen forum (http://www.penturners.org/forum/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=37350&SearchTerms=corian)(US). I purchased "black", grey and white, as well as some beige. The beige is only 1/2" thick and needs to be glued together with CA, after which I'm told you can't see the glue line when turned. Haven't done it yet, so can't give assurances on that score. The white, black and grey are 3/4 x3/4" . The so-called black isn't a straight black, but speckled with grey, a bit like terrazzo really.

Corian (note correct spelling) is generally used in countertops. Offcuts and sink cutouts are usable for accent pieces, possibly at little or no cost. IIRC, maximum sheet thickness is about 15-20mm, and gluing may be needed for pen blanks or similar large pieces. Very nice turning material. Google [corian werribee] got about 280 hits a few minutes ago. Worldwide Google, that is, not just WWF.

Scout around the kitchen building mobs for off cuts. This is how I have got some in the past.
It glues up just fine but have forgotten what they use. :doh: :no: As for machining you will love it. :2tsup:

Well I've never seen a piano pen :-) but I'm guessing you're talking about the black and white keys. The white keys were made from ivory in the past so they were not pure white.

Ivory is obviously not a goer any more. There are synthetic alternatives from GPS Agencies (http://www.ivoryalternative.com/) which is sold here by Lazarides Timber (http://www.lazaridestimberagencies.com/prod12.htm) agencies. There may be other suppliers as well.

There is also an ebony alternative so you can source the whole lot from Lazarides.

I don't know about the ebony substitute but the "ivory" is definitely available in 15mm rod.

Either option you got is corian I got mine out of a dumpster from kitchen buildres or go wood with ebony and holly

Go to Ebay-- There's a lot of Corian to bid on. Search 'pen blanks'. Most blanks are 1/2 x 1/2 but there are larger pieces once in a while.

WWally I have a recipe for imitation Ivory that should do the same as corian and you can colour it to what ever colour you might need. PM me for details, hmm might even put it up as a separate post for all to peruse
