Wonder what he will say

Ken Wraight (a top turner) is a member of our club and
gave me some hints in making a lidded bowl. Unfortunately
I only finished the base at the club and made the lid at home
later that day.

He has no idea of what I was going to do for the top
but expects to see it at our next meeting.

I made it all from a cracked piece of Cypress Pine and
overall am happy with the result. I wonder what he will
say though.

An excellent piece Allan well done a top job just make sure you show him the photograph too :D

You know how critical others can be when handling other turners stuff :roll: often we are our own worst critics :p

I haven't turned since high school, but I won't let that stop me, I'm feeling particularly opinionated today for some reason Alan:D I love the shape of the bowl and the lid, but that spindle, it looks like you modelled it on a brass garden hose nozzle. I have something against brass garden hose nozzles!:wink:

...........I made it all from a cracked piece of Cypress Pine .............Is there any other kind:o:~:C I just finished one yesterday myself - fixed the existing cracks before I started and managed to crack it in 2 more places just fitting the lid :~:C - - - - - but it is nice to turn :shrug:

The question that should be asked is.

How can I improve on that next time.

You always have to look at ways of improving your skills and this in turn improves your finished peices.

So have a closer look all the time . You are your own best critic.
If all else fails show SWMBO and get her to ctitique your work and tell her not to be diplomatic as you always want feedback.

I just did a google image search for Box Finials and what an amazing sight strange shapes sizes and figurements and by the standards I saw yours isn't to big maybe a tad short and stout in fact.

So Allan whats the verdict what did the great Phoo Bar say.:roll:

It's Grand Poobah thanks and I say not too bad as a first effort.

Needs refinement but that'll come with time. Smoother, cleaner, more defined lines, crisp clean v cuts and non boofy foot. Talking finial only here.

There are a lot of turners out there who have no idea what so ever how to turn a decent finial or for that matter how to turn anything between centers with style and finesse. After all spindle turning falls under the heading of real woodturning and you actually have to know what you're doing.

The verdict!

I met Ken again today at the club and with a degree of
trepidation pulled the lidded bowl out for his perusal.

Overall I believe he was quite pleased with the result
and courteously suggested some changes for the future.

a) The bowl and basic lid were quite good with minor
scratching that could be eliminated.
b) The inner wall of the bowl could be made a little
thinner but practice should overcome that.
c) The finial could be improved a lot by making a
gentle curve from the top of the lid to the highest
point. I did expect him to say that in some way.

Whilst Ken has been a member for a while it is only
very recently that he has been in a position to attend
the club regularly. I can say without hesitation that the
standard of turning, tool sharpening and techniques
has improved out of site. We are all grateful for his
interest and involvement.

P.S. Substitute lidded box for lidded bowl if you wish.
