A Little Ci1 Drama in the Dungeon

I was roughing out a larger piece for a HF, there were a lot of bark inclusions on the piece, I checked it for metal, as it was urban wood, so could have a few nails in it, it did not.

I was roughing away nicely and all of a sudden there was a loud crack, and the piece snapped off the tenon, bounce off the wall, and then trundled across the floor into the far corner.

I was wearing my full on Triton Power Respirator, but I was well clear of line of fire, so only my nerves were damaged

The only damage was to the tip of my Ci1 rougher...........

I'm fairly sure that I hit an embedded rock, there was a "hole" in the blank, that was rock shaped, about the size of a golf ball, but I've yet to find the rock.

I just turned the insert insert and started over.......

Oh yeah, the #1 side of the insert was getting dull, so it was good I changed it, but then I counted, and I've roughed out a total of 27 bowls with the first edge Now they were all green wood, and most were 12" to 8" in diameter.

I have found that it is quicker for me to grab my 3/8" bowl gouge to do the last cut to smooth out the rough out, than do the finishing cut, which does work, but take more time, and time and ease of use is, for me, what the Ci1 is all about.

Stu, that's was quite a experience, isn't.
I'm glad you stay in one piece, not to think about the fact that this object hits you.

Hi Ad, nice to see you!
The holiday was great, but way too short :(

The kids are still there, and I'm supposed to be renovating their bedroom, but I've been too busy with work at the liquor shop :doh:

Got to get a move on on that project.

I've also been rough turning a bunch of bowls, as the sealed up blanks have started to crack a bit, so I have to get that done as well, not nearly enough time in the day. :roll:

Thanks for that Stu - never can be too careful to see what is in timber - lucky break.

Very little damage to the Ci1 for such a meaningful stone.

I am going to order one of these tools this week. They seem good.

Scary stuff Stu. I'm still surprised it damaged the tip though, must have been some quartz or something as hard.

I'm loving my Ci1, but like you, agree with using it for roughing only, then it is usually over to the bowl gouge.

It can sometimes get too easy though. I was roughing out one of the pepper grinders I made the other day and I penetrated into a worm hole. Think giant dig-in. I didn't damage the Ci1 or my blank, they just stopped, but it ripped the blank clean out of the pin-jaws and sheared off 4 of the high tensile jaw screws :o. I thought I had damaged the actual jaws as well, but found a couple of the remaining screws had bent - not sure how the jaws survived when the high tensile screws failed, but the screws are cheap, so I am glad.

I may yet find the rock, as I've only done a quicky clean up of the area around the lathe, all them green curlies make the lathe rust, so I like to pick up the worst of it soon after I finish, but I've not done a really good cleaning, thing is, it could be just about anywhere, as it was most likely moving when it left the wood:o

We shall see.
