Hey

Over the past few months I have had the most wierd body swellings;

Lips, tongues, hands, fingers, that thing that hangs at the back of the throat (uvula). All at different times and very random.

Actually ended up being taken to the ER in the flashy waily bus with anaphylaxis twice and could only breath by leaning forward so the uvula would not block the windpipe. Had two shots of adrenalin (wow thats fun :)) and 130mg prednisolene and it finally went down after 8hrs.

Specialist finally diagnosed Salicylate Intolerance and have been on the most boring diet I have ever seen for the past week. Seems to be working, one small swelling when I mistakenly had some salicylate so things are going good.

Very wierd, particularly at 42.

Any one else had a similar issue :?

Fruits and aspirin contain salicylates, does that create a problem? Not asthmatic are you?

Anyway, glad to see you sorting it out, good luck with it.

Dazzler,
you must be allergic to aspirin, that's generally the only way you'll be sensitive to salicylates in food. Watch out for rum, actually most alcoholic beverages except for vodka and gin:(. If you do a search on these forums using salicylates as the key word you should find a thread of mine baout this. If you can't find it PM me. Also lay off food in tomato based sauces and those with lots of herbs.

Hey Mick

You sound like my dietician :p

On an elimination diet for a month. Grabbed some good cook books too and my wife is making the meals as good as they could be given the ingredients.

At least I can eat ice cream, pancakes with bacon and maple syrup......and gin and tonics :)

At least Im not the only swelling freak around :D

Perhaps you should buy a Polish or Russian cookbook, 1001 Ways With Cabbage.

Luckily I don't have that particular problem, but mushrooms set off my gout which is bad enough, if rarely fatal - I like mushrooms - they just don't like me..

I do however have several friends who have 'reactions' to various foods that have developed over the years - one married couple who are off all nightshades (tomato, potato, eggplant, chilli) and now seafood (at 39) - just mild digestive problems & weird dreams.

The other friend is of the swell-up-and-stop-breathing type with seafood (since 8), and does a Hindenburg impersonation (but keeps breathing) when she contacts nightshades - she has had a few near misses with seafood in sauces (anchovies) and marinades - last time she had a close call was at a Thai where she was given chicken, got the first mouthful in & started to swell up, stop breathing etc. - luckily there was a doctor at the table who had his full kit in his car outside - the waitress came back from the kitchen to say 'sorry, don't eat that, fish in the marinade' to find her stretched out on the floor having hypodermics shoved into her arm. My friend is still amused by the look of horror on the waitress' face - bet the waitress will check more carefully next time.

So, Yes, you are not alone, 'they' are not picking on you. I think there is a special diet book available thru' Royal Prince Henry Hospital in Sydney that lists foods by saliscylate content (yet another friend with mid-life allegy onset got it, turns out she is very allergic to SOY products as well as saliscylates - basically she can eat iceberg lettuce & steamed chicken, no commercial bread/flours)

Haven't heard of it before but I'm not surprised it exists. At least you now know what not to do,
Do not chew willow bark.

hope the good ale is free of the stuff.

Nope . If I'm really careful with what I eat I can have a beer occasionally. If I have two I get hayfever.:C

Thanks Mick, good link :2tsup:

I have the friendly foods book on order and bought one by sue dengate (failsafe foods)that has heaps of recipes.

Interesting about the itching mick. When I first got hit with it my right thumb swelled up twice as big as normal and then proceeded into my hand with the most amazing itching, but just under the surface, not on the skin itself. After about 8hrs the pain began to spread up my right arm, stopped, and the left thumb and hand started up. Lasted for a couple of days. Bloomin weird.

Will be interesting on tuesday as I am having knee surgery and they cant use NSAIDS, aspirin and a large number of things they usually use. Bet the pain will be worse than normal :(....nurse----more drugs please :D

Had a stupid conversation with the preadmission nurse yesterday, going on about how bad prednesone is (use about twice a week for severe swelling)and I shouldnt use it, on and on she went until I told her either I use it, jab myself every couple of days with two shots of adrelinine or die......silly cow.
