Started My Car

Well Got my plans from Joys & Toys yesterday.Had a look at them last night.
Started cutting some parts today.
I cut the 2 sides from 6mm Jarrah .Then used double sided tape to stick together.I then used a scroll saw to cut window opening. Cleaned them up with a spindle sander and file.I left outside of body as cut. This will become clear why later on.
Next I cut the firewall ,also from 6mm Jarrah.
Well the next bit was tricky for me.The roof.
Started out with large bit of Jarrah 125 x 30mm end section.
Cut a piece 115 long x 90 x 20mm and then shaped as photo.This goes between both sides to form roof.

I would have a wild guess at it taking 40 hours.There is some tricky bits to make.
The grill is a doosy.May take me a couple of goes at that..

you are right
This could be your next project
There is a lot that could be done on a scrollsaw.
so far I have only cut window openings with my scrollsaw.
But you could cut the side panels
mudguards and running board setup.
grill
The roof section would have to be done in strips and glued,
as it is approx 108mm wide
Bumpers ,
seat and many other parts
There is a 1928 chev pickup that would be worth you looking at.

Not alot done today.:?
Shaped a dark piece of Jarrah for grill.
I shaped timber both ends of wood the same.If the first attempt at grill failed I had the other end to work with.
Cut 3/32" strips of dark and light wood for radiator to fit in grill shell.
Glued strips together and sanded.
:C Centre of grill shell still needs finish
shaping and a recess in the back af it for radiator.
I marked out chassis and rough cut on bandsaw ready for sanding.
Looks like I will be making plenty of dust next time.:C

Cut some Darker jarrah today.Decided to start on the mudguards (fenders)
Wood was 30mm thick,I needed 19mm thick.
cut both guards from the 30mm then put through saw,down to 19mm
The wheel arches were opened up with a 70 mm holesaw then sanded on my spindle sander.The 3' drum was the right size.
I then cut the 2 inner guard pieces.(the tear drop looking bits)
Strange bits to work out,was a bit of trial and error.
The other small bit in photo is the rear roof panel with window opening..

I am not sure how I got into this really.:doh::doh:
A couple of years ago ,we moved house.Gave up my other hobbies because of lack of room and health.
There was a lot of offcut timber laying around the house,only oragon and pine.
I decided if I bought a few cheap tools,I could make something out of the offcuts.
I purchased a book an wooden locks and another on making wooden sundials.
Well you know how it goes.A scroll saw,router,table saw,etc.It is never ending
Found I really liked this wood stuff. ( I was always into rebuilding cars and some electronics ) How it got from scrap wood to building the odd box ,now toy car I am not quite sure.I have built plenty of wood locks including my own design.
I need a bit more gear now.The minister for war & finance is not real happy.

Which of the wooden lock books do you have? First or second? Did you make any of them?
Friend of mine bought the first one and I was hoping he'll hurry up and make some of them, hoped he'd then help me try one..... he's taking his time tho.

I like anything unusual, so the locks appealed to me.... also like simple moving things... the old fashioned toys..... just wish I had the nerv to use the "big, bad, noisy" wood working "toys" .... have to rely on Ken .... making a lot of what I do a joint effort..... and an exercise in patience on my part...... waiting...... waiting........ lol

It was the first book of locks.I made 3 different ones from book and several of each.
Then I started making my own as I wasnt happy with some of the workings etc
one of mine in photo.the shank is 30 mm dia to give you an idea off size (big):2tsup::roll:

Absolutely amazing.... great conversation pieces. Wow.... and you made your own too? A bit of an engineer are you? Wish I had the knowledge to do things like that. I have ideas, but not the know how.

I do however look for books all the time.... I think I must have borrowed each and every book our library can get a hold of on things like automata and wooden toys. There are some great books out there.

There's one called " making mechanical marvels in wood" ..... they aren't toys or useful things, more working models of different types of gears, but made from different timbers.... I'd love to make/have each and every one of them.

there's a second one too..... but the models in that really are way out of what I can hope to make.

Not a lot done today
I glued the inner guard bits on and sanded the joins when dry Then I started to shape one as per photos.
Hope to get more done tomorrow if all is well.

Hi Yonnee. I have bought the spoked wheels as in the photo of the car.As I also did with headlights.The spoked wheels are a bit beyond me at the moment,but the headlights are a piece of cake really.If you buy the kit of parts,it works out that you get the lot cheaper than buying the 5 wheels only.
You would be surprised how quick the car is to do.Full size plans and basically trace and cut.

Nothing much to report today.Shaped the grill and recessed the back to take the radiator.I would do this another way next time.
Rounded off the other guard,now trying to get them to be a mirror pair.(I said trying.)
Will see how I go tomorrow with them.
Also cut the timber for the seat and roughly shaped them..
Looks like I only have the bonnet and boot area to cut out.Oh plus bumpers etc.
I am going to make the bonnet one piece to start and not glue it in place as I want to have sides and top hinges as per real car.That way I can make a wood motor and sit it in place ----So a block of wood will do to get the car in shape.then I can do the bonnet thing at a later date..:U

Cut the bonnet today.2 pieces of Jarrah 4 1/4" x 4 1/4" then cut sides at 15 degrees as photo. Sat most of the rough cut parts together to get an idea off where I am at.
I will be trying to put grooves in seats so they look the part.If it doesn't work to plan ,then just plain wood seats would be the go.
Starting to look like a car.I am a bit short on pink Jarrah,so I will bave to make the boot from other wood then laminate it.Not the best but thats the way it goes.

I'm Back.
I have started to shape a lot of parts.First was the bonnet top.That didnt last long,I dropped it.Then I had to do a repair.See Photo.
Next was the seat.
Doesnt come up to good in photo.I will have to have a look at that.
Made a simple jig to drill the axle holes all in the right place on the 4 corners of the chassis.This worked fine.
All wheels touch the ground at once and no rocking.
Glued inner sides on body.
Setup some parts to see how it is looking.
Still havent made the boot area.I have run out of pink Jarrah.
I will spend my next 2 sessions shaping and sanding.Going to be a lot of that.

Back again.
Things went a bit slower today.
A lot of thinking ,and not much action.
Had a boss like that once.
Worked on the seat back .It measured square
but looked high one side,so I reshaped it.
Think it is ok now.
I drilled and screwed back to base off seat
Didnt trust glue.once the seat is in the car,I cant get to it for repair
so I screwed & glued . I know,but that is me.
Next I glued the back window to the roof section.Will clean this up tomorrow.
Have done some sanding on other parts but finnished none.
I was hoping to get some more Jarrah but looks like someone lifted it for firewood.

I recut the bumper bar I lost the other day then split in two for front and back.As you would.
I don't know how the pros would cut it.I marked it out and stuck the patern on the Jarrah with contact.I then cut the outer with the small bandsaw .I then sandes any sharp cut marks out of it so I didnt have any weak spots.
I then cut the inner side and sander and scraped both sides.
When I was happy with it I seperated it on the bandsaw and cleaned up the edges.
Feel free to tell me a better way to do something please.
I am only learning and thats what I want to do.Learn.:2tsup:

Did some more sanding and remodeling to get the lot to fit together.
I am going to order a 3mm roundover bit in the morning to do around the window areas.
I think my 1/4" bit should do the roof line and boot area.Will try on a spare couple of bits of Jarrah .I dont want any tareout on the roofline

Chipman Old bumper never showed up maybe tomorrow.I am going to make a take 2 of this car someday.

Nothing worth a photo today.I turned up a gear stick
.Drilled a 3/16" hole at 15 degrees to suit in chassis.Then a hole at 30degrees in dashboard for steering wheel.
Repaired,fixed,sanded several parts.Glued and sanded bonnet.I drilled the chassis/bonnet combination from under chassis with 10mm drill,then slid 10mm dowel in both holes.This way I can remove,replace or open holes and reposition slightly.
I needed to have a semi permanent bonnet to enable me to shape gaurds to suit.
I thought I had mentioned this before ,but someone asked how I was glueing shaping and sanding the same day.I use quickset epoxy and C A glue.Very little PVA.
I like the epoxy for several reasons.One is obvious really quick setting 2 it cleans up ok.You wouldnt know there was a join in some cases It doesnt creep in the join.I hate it when PVA creeps. You get it all smooth today,then you notice you need to sand again to get it flush with the wood again..I use the CA glue when there are small parts such as gearstick or steering wheel.
I maybe doing things the wrong way.This is just the way I find best for me.I am willing to change if there is a better way.
I feel I get a lot more work done in the same time by using these glues.No down time .

The creeping with pva is really annoying...I have been caught out with it too. Anyway it looks like you are doing well with it... it is often the way that the little fiddly bits take up the time but it is the attention to detail that makes it into a great job and from the pics, yours is certainly heading that way.

No progress today.
Put my neck out somehow.Not feeling crash hot at the moment.
I also want to keep all my fingers etc if possible,so keeping away from machinery.
Must thank McJing tools.I ordered an 1/8" roundover router bit to do window openings yesterday .$15 plus $7 postage.It arrived today express post.Cant get better than that.

I am Back
Feeling a bit better today.
I have started to glue some of the bits together.
I glued the roof to the 2 sides.I had to make a dummy spacer for the boot areaThis enabled the both sides to sit in position for the roof and check other parts for proper fit.
Prelim sanding off roof to sides.
Will run 1/4" roundover bit around roof sides next.
I turned up gearstick.on mini lathe.
Coated steering wheel ,gear stick and headlights with poly.
Did some more shaping to guards.A lot more to go yet till they look OK.
The Jarrah dust is as fine as talc ,You can see it in photos as white patches.

Well I am happy with today.
Looking at what I did now
doesn't look much,but felt like
I was getting a lot done somehow.
I setup the router and run the 3mm
roundover bit around the side and rear window openings.
Then fitted the 1/4" roundover a went toroof/ sides area..I did this knowing I needed to do it with the 1/2"
roundover bit later.I figured this was safer for me to take a bit at a time. Then hit it with the 1/2".
Gave it a bit of a scrape and sand.
body work will now wait till I have some more wood.(on its way)

I have done some more parts cleaning up and trial fitting.
Coated one guard side with Poly to find the bad spots.
Have a look how dark it went with one thin coat.
I turned up the steering column and spacer
The photo also shows the gear stick I did the other day,
and the kit steering wheel.
Sanded parts of the body and gave a light coat of wipe on to check how it is going.
Starting to look the part now I think.
Hope to get more wood tomorrow

Cleaning up parts till wood arrived today.
cut wood for boot (trunk in USA) Used 3 sections of wood as in photos.
Top layer looks a mess at the moment
Have to cut it the best way I can.
Have a look tomorrow and it will be wonderfull.
Someone said you must have some gear.
Well I havent just small cheap stuff.
This is why I threw in this rough shot
I drilled the 3 bits to take locating dowels.They work wonders for me,.
Will glue up this trio tonight ready for tomorrow

reason

Glued up the ugly lump af wood I hacked out for the boot.
Clamped with my new clamps.$21.99 I think from Bunny's.
Were in cat for $28.?? .I got an email from a friend telling me about them.
Also on Stu's shed.Great buy. Thats for the set of 4.
When glue set ,I sanded sides till it fitted between car sides.
When happy with that I marked with pencil the body line.
Sanded the daylights out of it till I ended up with what you see in Photos.:doh::~

Have you got a dremel or an engraver? Aldi had a dremel look-a-like for cheap recently and Juvy, those clamps look reasonable... especially for light clamping like you do in toy making.

Thanks chipman.Yes I do have a dremel (look alike) with a few tips or ends.I will practice doing straight lines etc tomorrow.Sounds good to me.

Maybe you could find someone in your area who does have the experience? we're very lucky here... our club has lots of different "experts" .... always someone who knows or can do what we don't know ourselves.

If you use a pen.... make sure you let the ink/colour set overnight or so to make sure it won't smear when you put the poly!

If you use a dremel/engraving tool.... once you've got your "dents" you could paint over them with dark paint ... rub off right away.... ( like antiquing) that way the letters would be easier to read.

Glued boot area into car body,cleaned it up a bit ,
then run the router down both sides.
Gave it a bit of a rub and put a wipe of poly on to show
spots that need working on.

I actually have a stair tread (300x50x1000) in that black flecked Jarrah. I was at the timber merchant's to buy a piece of blackwood for a kitchen repair job for my brother inlaw and when I saw it, I couldn't help myself:D just had to buy it and went home happy but $80 poorer:rolleyes:

I have also got a mortar and pestle turned out of another piece and turned a lidded box for another friend. It really is nice stuff. I will see if I can find a picture of a piece of it.

Ah, here it is (turned in end grain and the lighter wood is Canadian Maple rescued from my father in law's wood pile in Benalla.

Hi Munruben and wheelinround.
By the way I am in the dummies group as well.
I just do what feels OK.
The glues I used on the car are epoxy quickgrip,
epoxy 5 minute ,and superglue and activator.
With the activator,apart from making it set quicker you can also fill gaps using it,or build up fillets.Very handy .I fill little nicks etc and spray them with activator.It sends the dob of super glue off and as hard as a rock.Sand it down and no more hole or gap.
Get them at hobby shops The ones for wood.Not the one for plastic.
The epoxy quick grip (sellys) sets very quick,great if you need to hold something till it sets.Takes a lot longer to go right off(real hard a day or more.)
makes the job a bit slower but you can watck tv or do some other jobs.
A bit dear though,I think it was $16 for a syringe setup.
I bought one syringe off it,Got home and it wouldnt work.Contacted selleys and they sed it was aut of date.The sent me (i think 2 or 3 syringes of it. ) I took the old one back to shop and showed them my email and asked for a refund.
I was offered another one.I asked if it was new stock and was told it wasnt.Grabbed my money and left the building.I only look silly.
Would need to be a special job for me to buy it again.
I buy a range of things to try,Pick the ones that suit me and use them
Always test them on scraps and go all the way till it looks a finished product.
That way I dont get any surprise later.
I am only new to woodwork but learnt to fully test things with other jobs over the years.
When I get a chance I will say how I get a finish on the wood .I dont use primer sealer or oils anymore .Takes too long, and still get a reasonable finish I think.
I carry on a fair bit don't I?

This may be the last for a short time.Most of the work I will be doing is puting the interior in the car.Steering wheel, gear stick ,seat,back shelf, etc.
Then mounting trims on bonnet and sides of car.
Marking door and boot openings.
Also have the head and tail lights to mount along with many other small and fiddly jobs that may not be interesting or hard to photograph.
Any How! todays progress..I have finished one guard and included photo with unfinished guard 3 coats on finished,Has come up nice and glassy looking.
One of the main body ,,getting close to outside being finished (a few hours)
The other photo is the boot area with 2 coats.
It looks like this may take several coats and sanding to get it smooth.
The whole area is basically end grain.I think that is what you would call it.Let me know please.
Already planning my next car.I would buy a large plank of Jarrah if I could get it.
This is so I could get it all the one color.And another for dark parts.
Even this would not be perfect,as cut on different angles and the angle you look at it make it change color.I cant change the color to match like the pros. so that would be my best bet.After working with pine then camphor Jarrah is a magic wood to work with.To me it does everything I want it to do.
While you are reading this I have 6 sticks off DDR 400 RAM 500 meg each for sale.

The choice of wood and the colours of the different parts are excellent...contrast for the guards and wheels and the rest is blending in nicely even with the different direction of the grain.

Just added this bit.I was talking about me using super glue.And noticed a post from watson that led me to this today sept 11

With the grains running in different directions.They are all running the length of the car.
Including the roof and boot.,But because some are curved or rounded they look otherwise.I have included the boot wood before shaping.You can see the grain.When I rounded the rear off it it looks different.I am having trouble explaining it (as I usually do)I just noticed. If you look in the back window of the car,you can see the untreated wood.this is the same bit as the outside of the window but not cut at an angle.Previous post,just above this one

Yes end grain is correct you matched up the grains nice on the boot .........nice unit variation would be with a Dickie seat in the back.

A sanding sealer or using water to create a slurry may help with end grain sanding you can always try on scrap see if it suits your needs.

Colour change can be difficult as it easy using house hold cleaners etc for bleaching and sanding/sawdust soaked/boiled in water to create dyes/stains or of course U-beaut dyes.

Your wheels look great are they two piece turned then halved spokes inserted and rejoined ???

Some answers for Wheelinround I really didnt match up grains on boot at all.That is the way they turned out by them selves.All I did was make sure the timber grain run from fron to back of car as is the rest of car.
Oh Wheelinround.You mentioned post from perth.Well I was in post office yesterday near 5.00pm and was told post is going up on MONDAY man.
All I know is letters are going from 50c to 55c ,so parcels are not going to be cheap.

I will get lathe to the front for a photo soon.It is a small Jewelers lathe from Japan,
I have had it for about 30 years.Made for metal work.I dont do any metal work now,but dug it out to make 3 bits of Jarrah for my box in the challenge.The radiator cap and the 2 little stands under the back of it.Dont have a wood lathe,so you use what you have.
I have made the gear stick on it, for this car and steering column shown if earlier post.
I got a very low score for finish from at least one judge on that box. It is so smooth and clear people that have seen it cant believe it .Is this wrong?

The wheels.Well I bought them fromThe Plan maker Joys and Toys in USA.
I got the kit before I got the plans. Just to see how god they were.They are top stuff.
To me anyway.Since then I have got the plan for this car and a truck along with the truck wheels.Truck wheels are same wheels without the insert with spokes.I have included a pic of truck wheel.The car wheel has the centre with spokes sitting in the centre of this.No split in any direction. The truck wheel would be easy to turn up,but insert for car is beyond me at the moment,

Has turned many things in steel,aluminium and brass.

Back Again With Small Parts And Jigs.I didn't leave town.I have had things to do.
Besides these small parts take time.

The expensive stand I am using to hold the small parts while drying ,holds 5 axle pegs.I have stained the ends dark Jarrah then polyed.Next to them is the headlights on their brackets.Then the steering wheel & column,followed by the thin gear stick.
The seat has dowels fitted and locate in the chassis.I dont want the seat to come loose in car,as you cannot get to it when body is glued to chassis. Below this lot are the 5 wheels, Grill and both bumpers. All nearly ready to fit.Getting closer now.:2tsup:

Next Photo is the jig I made to drill the guards for the tail lights.The end bracket is swapped to the other side to drill the other guard.Just pull the pin,put bracket on the other side and replace pin.Works fine. Bit hard to see but the clamp is holding the guard in place

The last photo is the jig for drilling the headlights for mounting dowels.Put h/l in large hole and drill down the top hole that gets them centered .Both are the same.I made second hole with longer small shaft for more accuracy. Tested this on large dowell first.:;:;

It was suggested I put a working boot lid in car.Well I am working things out for my next car.Hope to have a dicky seat .and opening bonnet as well and a wood motor under bonnet.
Not sure what next project will be yet.
Could be a wooden lock.Maybe an A model Ford Truck.I have the plans for this now.
Or maybe another 34 chev with the above mods.:~

But I can see you are back on the job now. The fiddly bits take time don't they.

I like your jigs...the only way to go really, even for one offs. At least if you decide to make another one, you will have it already set to go.

I have templates for lots of things and often mix and match them to get what I want on another project. With your headlight drilling jig, just makesure the lights are the samr size for the next project.

If you ever do another, you could do one without the guards, and glue two wheels together for each side of the rear. You wouldn't even have to do a bonnet... although trying to replicate a sidevalve V8 would be a challenge. Chev might be easier.:;

Had troubles with my car.No photos.But I got a lot of dust in the last coat.SO I have to do a lot of scraping and sanding I suppose.I nearly landed it up the drive,but thought of all the work I had put into it (and showing it finished shortly on this thread)

I usually put finish on then put it in a large thing that blankets came in.Big clear square bag with a zipper.I have a wire frame in it to hold its shape.Keeps all the dust off.

I have had a bit of progress on the car at last.
I think all the parts are done in poly.and with a few adjustments
here and there it should all go together.
I have been doing some more testing with finishes as well.
I bought some Micro-Mesh in a sort of a kit.
9 different grades and a chart.Each grade is a different color.
The last 3 grades begin to polish the finish.The last one,called 12000
actually gives a very high polish in no time flat.if you go through the grades.
I first saw it on TJ's CA pen demo.so I thought I would check it out.
He was using 2" x 2" pads,I got the 3" x 4" pads because of the size of the car I am doing I also got the Micro Gloss Liquid Abrasive. Really is a very fine polish,but I dont think it is needed.You would have to see this stuff to believe it.No cheap but no doubt
it will get cheaper.
Give me your thoughts on it.
Back to the car.I have mounted the body and bonnet to the chassis.Fitted the spare wheel.Also made all the small parts except the number plate and brackets.I justthought of them as I was typing this.My age is showing,OH well.
