Don't know what kind of wood this is for These candle holders
but boy it is hard I spent half the time on the grinder sharpening
as I did turning.

Mmmm... redgum.

Any particular reason for the texturing in the first one?

Nice bit of figure in the 2nd, at first glance at the thumbnail I thought "Oregon!" :-

Hi Skew The reason for the texture,
well the wood has a dark line runing through so I experimented
just to see if it worked or not.
The 2'nd one is Redgum as well.Tony.

Yeah, I saw that line (I thought it might've been a hairline crack) and I'd noticed that the texturing sorta followed it.

I usually only apply texture when wood is a bit bland and needs some excitement added (which that doesn't) or to hide tear-out or other problem areas near cracks that were a bit... "iffy." :-

So I was wondering whether you were playing or "hiding." :U

Yep. Like I said, nice figure in it. :)

Nice bit of turning Tony:2tsup:

Amazing the beauty that is hidden in a lowly fence-post.

Did well.

Some old redgum can be rock hard .. how was your lidded box piece?

Agree with Skew here ... limited texturing, say in a band on figureless timber, can be striking. Otherwise, it's over-egging the pudding.

Hi Ern. The lidded box was very hard to turn because the wood was very dry
having been stored in the shed for a couple of years. But not as hard as the
candle holders I don't know what wood it is But like I said I spent half the time on
the grinder as I did on the lathe.
I agree with you and Skew the texturing on the lidded box didn't turn out to good
I wasn't to happy with it myself but I gues that's how we learn through trail and
error. Thanks for looking.Tony:)

Yeah, lots of wood out there;

Lots of playing around possible. Nothing is lost.

Nice work Tony :2tsup:

You can never have enough old redgum posts; the fiddleback figure in the second photo is stunning.

Cheers,
Evan :D
