I've run out of pure Tung Oil and the bloke who supplied me the last lot has gone out of business. So I've been looking for another bulk (200L+) supplier.

Anywho, I came across Howard Australia, who I used to source small amounts through and I noticed they have an Orange-Tung Oil. (http://www.howardproducts.com.au/products/orange_tung_oil.htm)

Our 100% pure Tung Oil combined with our 100% pure Orange Oil plus a secret natural ingredient.

Howards are pushing it as a floor & furniture finish, but I can't see any reason it couldn't be used for turning... and I'm wondering if anyone here has tried it? :?

Have you tried www.thewoodworks.com.au (http://www.thewoodworks.com.au) ... or were they the crowd that went out of business?

(Devil's dictionary entry: tung oil ... a product produced by the tongue activity of the marketing expert).

The largest they list is only 5L... and they're asking more than half what I paid for 20! :oo:

I know. But I'm not after a Tung Oil "finish," I'm after 100% pure Tung (China Wood) Oil. :2tsup:

Here in Oz the article referred to in that thread would be more appropriate if it substituted "Danish oil" for "Tung Oil." I reckon that 99% of the finishes sold here as a Danish Oil have as much Linseed Oil in 'em as a glass of Chardonnay or cup of coffee.

Have you tried Sceneys? there in Sunshine, Vic. Click here. (http://www.yellowpages.com.au/bi/sceneys-pty-ltd-sunshine-vic-560429.html) As far as I know they only sell raw.

Havn't used Orange Tung oil, but they sell two different versions of it, the furniture version that has 70% tung 30% orange, and the flooring version which has more orange (the drier) as it seems the flooring people don't like to wipe off after rubbing on. Or so the story goes.

Skew,

I generally use raw tung oil and sometimes combine it with orange oil. Sceneys have raw tung oil and some paint stores stock it but not all. The orange oil I use is Howards which I picked up from the WWW show 2 years ago and set be back $200 for 4 litres or you can for around $20 pick up Gilly stephensons orange oil in a 250 ml from bunnings. Havn't used howards tung and orange oil combo so I can't comment.
The brew I make consists of 40% orange oil and 60% tung

Cheers,
Evan:)

That orange-tung oil sounds interesting, anyone know how it would go as a finish for indoor furniture?
Also, on the subject of china wood oil, anyone know what goes into it? I asked at bunnys for some tung oil & they pointed to the china wood oil. It says that it 'contains' tung oil. Just like my bank account 'says' it contains money, just not very much. haha.

Rattrap, Tung Oil (also known as China Wood Oil) is a natural product, a drying oil as are Linseed Oil and Soya Bean Oil.

There is a good article on this in Wikipedia (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tung_oil), makes interesting reading.

Rattrap, if in doubt ring the manufacturer and ask them straight.
Or pehaps before that check on the manufacturer's web site for the safety data sheet, as they sometimes list the ingredience.

This reply sponserd by Keyboard Oil.

Ben.

Ps. If you remember, what was the brand, size and price of the china oil?

Just as an aside, I bought some of Howards Feed & Wax after watching Richard Raffan use it at the WWW show. I used it on some red gum lidded boxes and it's wonderful if you're looking for a soft lustre finish. I'm sold on it!

I have bought some from Bunnies, takes for ever and a day to dry. Dont use it on existing varnish as it tends to lift the finish off............:C

Thanks Evan. So it's a viable combination? That's good to know, I wasn't too sure whether it was just a bit of hype or not; it's not a mix I've come across before.

By popular vote, it appears that Sceneys will be my next port of call.

And then I'll source some Orange Oil so I can mix my own and see what the difference is for myself. :)

That'd be the orange juice... errm... oil. :D Having accidentally spilled orange oil on a good teak table-top (:- An event I'm still reminded of from time to time by she of the long memory and short temper) I was rather wondering whether it'd be compatible with other finishes.

I'm a tad surprised that you say it takes so long to go off,
