I Googled Pennsylvania Woodturners, and Woodturners, East Stroudsburg, PA & got a bunch of hits.

If you find a turning organization or turner to show you a few basics, then start turning anything you can get your hands on, you will learn. It's like learning to ride a bicycle.

Turning Bowls by Richard Raffan is a wonderful book.

Help is closer than you think, Bill Grumbine has a video about basic bowl turning plus he is just a hour south of you.

There are a plethora of vids on utube, also this video is quite helpful.

There is a short sponsor message before the demonstration begins.

Cheers & good luck

Bowl gouges come in quite a variety of forms and uses such that I'd hesitate to use the one term for them all.

I'd endorse Paul's advice to find a local turning club, and better still shell out the money to get lessons.

Edit: If I were teaching you, and you had a swivel head lathe and one or two curved rests, I'd show you techniques, tool types and grinds, rather different from those needed if you hadn't those things.

Too right! Just when you think you've mastered one type, they release another.

(And then someone like comes along to show you how you haven't really mastered your gouge; you just thought you had... in reality you've just taken your first baby steps! :-:p)
