View Full Version : Bowl from a board

Hi all,

It's been a few months since I turned anything but last weekend, following Ray Lanham's bowl from a board concept, I cut out and glued up a blank. I had some time to turn it today (isn't it nice to be on holidays?) and here's the result. The wood is Blackheart Sassafras and the size is 300 x 100mm. All comments welcome.

Happy Christmas and New Year to all. Hope you enjoy your turning over the break and receive lots of presents (can Santa lift all those tools?).

For those interested, here is Ray's website - http://www.coeur-de-larbre.com (http://www.coeur-de-larbre.com/index2.html)

Always been a bit sceptical about that kind of glue-up, but yours works very nicely.

Fredo, I love what you did with the concept, especially the nice touches at the foot and the beading under the rim. The rim looks exceptionally beautiful. Was this the wood you started with at my demo or is this another bowl you turned from your own wood? Whatever you answer you did me proud and I appreciate the fact that you've memtioned me in your posting.
Now, don't stop with this one. Use some different woods and see how you can develop the concept. I'm currently working on another version of the BFAB concept to produce the look that Michael Mode developed. Check out Mode's website at this link: http://www.michaelmode.com/. Also, look on WoW for the album of Edward Robinson. Ed's doing some fabulous BFAB turnings.
Please email me at my website if you have more photos of your work, I'd love to display them on my site as well.

Cliff,
Thanks for the heads up about this posting. Weren't you the bloke in the corner of the tent at Prossy with the waterfall coming off the roof on the first day? How is the weather on the tablelands? Have you joined WoW yet? Please send me some photos of your work

Hi all,

Thanks for the kind words.
Ern, this was my first attempt and I must have made the right choice of timber as I thought the end result was good. I did not have any concerns with the turning, I felt the joints were tight and the glue up was good (use PVA glue). It turned like a solid blank, really.
Ray, I think this bowl, as a first attempt worked well, and I'm glad you liked it. I quite enjoyed making it actually, and will certainly make some more (I even built a glue-up press). There is not a lot of waste with this type of turning. I kept and glued up the four corner off-cuts from the top ring and made a small peanut bowl (see pics).
Michael Mode's website boggles the mind.
Again, thanks for your kind comments,

Fredo :U

I'll have to sort out some finished pieces & do a gallery of mug shots.

Fredo,
Isn't it great to have no waste when turning a bowl. Have you visited WoW yet?

Gooday Cliff, can you tell me what is WoW please. I'm sure it must be something simple but I can't get anything related to woodturning when googling. I've tried world of woodturning, (the most obvious) but nothing, zilch. Tried WoW and I get a truck load of World of Warfare; how sad :C.

Thanks,
Evan

Thanks Ray; it always is something simple, WoW (World of Woodturners).
I managed to create an account and waiting for a response from the group manager to approve of my request. If I have any probs I'll e-mail you. Thanks again for your advice.

N.B. Your work is stunning :2tsup::2tsup::2tsup:. Do you do your own photography?

Evan,
Yes, I do my own photography. I have a photo tent made from white ripstop nylon, a window pull shade and PVC pipe. I take the photo tent outside to my front porch, pull down the window shade backdrop (painted photography gray) set up the article I want to photograph and voila! Thanks for your kind comments on my work. I hope to be adding a new dimension to the site soon.

Evan,
It's "WoWie" like in "newbie" and welcome to WoW! There's more information there then you can almost consume, so take you time but do look through the "File Cabinet" for lots of great "How To" articles. Also read the FAQ's so you don't raise the ire of those who monitor the postings.
