Great work there!:2tsup::2tsup::2tsup:

All of it really shows the value of using plain gained timber for OT.

Ray, I'm sure I said all the work in the link I turned free hand :o using a simple tool and cutters which I made , the tool is held in a similar way as you would hold a bowl gouge, that's it as far as equiptment goes:o.

If you don't believe how the work has been done then please feel free to express your opinion or theory:rolleyes:

OK here’s a simple one, this is a 65mm disk of end grain cherry held in the chuck, the lathe speed was 775rpm
This is the first cut which took about a minute.

http://i150.photobucket.com/albums/s100/dattwood/firstcut.jpg

I’ve cleaned up the edge and the centre for the next cuts.

http://i150.photobucket.com/albums/s100/dattwood/secondcut.jpg

Changed the cutter and then cut the outside edge.

http://i150.photobucket.com/albums/s100/dattwood/thirdcut.jpg

Another quick change of the cutter to do the centre.

http://i150.photobucket.com/albums/s100/dattwood/forthcuts.jpg

Tidy up and cut in the lines with a small skew, I slipped and sliced the centre:doh:

http://i150.photobucket.com/albums/s100/dattwood/fifthcut.jpg

Cleaned up with a soft brass brush and wire wool, the finish could be much better with a bit more time spent on it and the wood was a little bit to soft as you can see from the small pieces that have broken away, you can also see how the grain can interfere with the pattern on the bottom left of the disk.
All the work was done in 10 minutes max.:)

Gee Dean it takes us usually 15 minutes to set up the Rose Engine let alone do the cuts that work is amazing :2tsup:

I would be interested I can tell you that for sure what are expected costs of the tool/set up???

Looking at it so far it's all face work, will it do between centres such as on finial's sides of cylinders/lidded boxes.

Ray, the price for the whole set up was going to be around £60 uk.

Ray

Ray, it's a hand tool for use on end grain:doh: it's not a machine.
The idea of tool was to be a quick and simple way to add a little decoration which anyone who enjoys turning could achieve regardless of experience, you could make your designs as simple or as difficult as you want, some of the effects/cuts are very challenging but most are simple and it does get easier with practice, the same as anything else new.

If you sell your turning work at craft fairs or such, what price do get for a small plain bowls, boxes, dishes or bottle stoppers?

How much extra would you get if the items had a little decoration that only took you minute to achieve?

How much more rewarding would it be as a complete novice if you were able to add simple but very effective decoration to your first pieces of work?:)

Link please Ray, I've seen nothing :?

oh and I have seen RS's larger brother used on spindle turning so why not yours or their smaller one.

Could it be because the two RS's tools and my tool work in completely different ways, both give different effects and both use different cutters, both are seperate in disign and looks so what I would like to know is WHO said it's a copy of the RS tool?:2tsup:

It's all history now anyway, you live and learn:)

think you mentioned it actually Dean in the past elsewhere

Ok so I take it a patent is being sort or is it some other reason no one can see the tools yet.

keep us informed :2tsup:

When you mentioned hand tools and hammer ion the same sentence I assumed it was done with the lathe turned OFF. I was imagining something along the lines of a compass with a cutting edge and wondering at your precision...
