Ta for the EOIs folks. (http://www.woodworkforums.ubeaut.com.au/showthread.php?t=87380 )

Polling booth is open. Multiple choices are now possible.

10 am kick off.

Bring your own meat to barbie. Coffee & tea, CRC, a green salad (for TL if you come) and bread will be provided.

If you have surplus turning blanks or tools to donate, sell or swap, bring them along.

Address and map are in the attached image. Head for the tallest tree in the street. (Hmm, didn't compress too well: it's 27 Delaware St., Reservoir; 10 mins from the Ring Road).

All forum members welcome.

Rookie, you show me your spiral beads and I'll show you mine

And for others ... give us an idea of what you like to see or learn.

Hi rsser,
Is this the tallest tree in the street?
Sorry, I just decide to use the available technology, and have a look at your street, even tough I'm unable to attend. A bit uncertain where the No27 is, as the No's, 26,28,29 etc do appear in the pics, but not the 27:?, how did you do that?

Cheers:2tsup:

Thanks for your contribution.

Ern, I'd like to see of bead turning on bowls. gave me a demo before the New Year, but I'd be interested in another one. And, of course, some more tuition using the bowl gouge.

OK to bring the missus?

Sunday the 8th. works best for me due to work commitments, but if another day gets the vote I'll pull the great aussie "sickie". Ern I don't think my CRC making skills are up to public scrutiny just yet, however I will bring a BFC instead. As for a demo I'd like to see some deep hollowing/closed vessel and/or thin wall bowl turning. I can bring a bit of SO (already started) for the deep hollowing demo.

Jeff, yep Anne would be very welcome. Just in time for bowl beading; was about to throw out the practice piece.

And a bit of SO would be good for some deep hollowing. Or David's green English Oak.

Goodo folks.

Feb. 1 it is. Apologies to those who'd like to come but aren't free on the day.

Since it's inefficient for you all to arrange barbie meat I'll organise it and ask for a donation. Snags and marinated chicken drumettes.

GJ, you eat free if you can manage a BFC but don't sweat if it's not do-able. I can ask Helen to do another CRC.

Given the catering, pls confirm at least a couple of days beforehand whether you're coming.

I'll be offering a few turning blanks to swap: Cypress (bowl or spindle acc. to interest; dry), a species of flowering cherry (branchwood, green), Brushbox (bowl, green), Norfolk Pine (bowl or spindle acc. to interest; dry) and other assorted pieces.

OK, well we have some time during the morning to add something in, and for those interested, it'll be a beginners' bowl turning demo and Q&A, kicking off at 9 am.

So the rough program is 9 - 10.30, bowl turning.

Morning tea.

11 - 12, turning a bead on a bowl; tools and a play.

Lunch

1.30 onwards: hollowing ... tools and a play.

So as per the last post, let me know if you're coming for catering purposes.

Looking forward to it.

I've been rostered to work 8:00 - 14:00 on the 1st, but I'm desperately trying to do a swap for another day, or at least get someone to cover me from midday. Unfortunately my hours in Feb. have been cut right back to about 10 hrs. a week, so I can't afford to "pull a sickie". I'll let you know the outcome.

First thing, at 10 am: bowl turning

Next, turning a bead on a bowl

After lunch, either hollowing tools/techniques or how to turn a thin bowl.

Forecast for Sunday is c. 31 C. For those who don't know, the inner sanctum is air conditioned. And I'll load up the Esky with ice so bring your preferred tipple.

As for wood, David is kindly bringing down some, and as posted earlier I also have some to swap or for a donation, but do let me know what species/form you're interested in cos it's not exactly the weather for blocking down lumps on spec.

Now Rodent, a bowl is what you turn to put chips in, or spit olive pips into. So they have a place in this world, alongside pens costing megabucks and bulk time just to imitate a one-buck biro :p

Back on line.

The wireless router/access point transformer appeared to have died (the 2nd time with this model). A replacement had the router throwing up an error msg with its leds. Course I couldn't google what it meant.

So got a new router this morning but thought before ripping the package open I'd reconnect the old setup, and yep, it worked.

So maybe it's the heat :?

Back home from Ern's turnfest and happy to see my place is still here - fires not far down the road. And the shed hasn't been ransacked either.

Yes, another great outing with the Vic contingent of the forum. But, as always, there are negatives. First up, I think I need some beading tools, not the Hamlet ones that would be impossible to sharpen correctly. What breed were the other ones Ern, how much and where do you get them?

Also, I need instructions on use!

Second negative - I forgot the blackwood 4 by 4s. Never mind. Put some aside for me Ern and that would be great.

Third, I now need air con in the shed. A costly exercise, but it was sooo nice in the Den when it was oppressive outside.

Now for the positives (and there were quite a few)....

First and BEST, had a massive catch. A beauty. So it happens even to the experts.

After that, the crew were banging and clapping anyone who dared step up to the lathe. A nice touch I thought, more so as I was struck again by stage fright. That was No 2.

2A was all the catches and ripples from crew! I don't need to feel so bad afterall.

For three, I always like to see what others are turning. No names, but the product was impressive. I must get into segmented bowls and pens at some stage.

Four, excellent tucker. Thanks for that Ern, hope you're not out of pocket.

Five, great instruction (again) from those with the knowledge. Somehow, we need to capture some of it for posterity. So who is good on the camera?

Six, a great beer - JD, was that you?

Thanks again guys for a great outing. I promise to host one here later in the year when the new house is up. I just hope a few can make it, as it's a 3 1/2 hour haul from Melb.

regards Jeff

Hi Jeff,

Glad you got something out of the day.

The Blackwood spindle blanks weren't cut by Sun., but I hope to get around to them tomorrow.

The beading tool with the flute is a Henry Taylor. The small one came from The Woodsmith; the larger one from Craft Supplies in the US when they had a sale on of HT tools and our dollar was worth something.

Calm and others, esp Ern.

I did like the Stubby! Still not sure about all the moving parts though.

And I had the missus there and she told me in no uncertain terms that another lathe was out of the question. also said as much - he reckons my VL300 will do me (for the moment).

When will they start making lathes for lefties?

JeffOne of the reasons I got a Stubby - far more 'lefty' friendly than a conventional rig :2tsup:

I am a lefty as well:oo::oo:
what a pain life is.You would think we didn.t exist.
Dont know anything about wood lathes at all ,and may get banished from this thread:D but Being a Lefty.I have had the same sort of problems.
Can the lathe be turned around ?

(end for end ) then get the electrics transfered to the other side. This is only good if motor can be reversed.Tool rest shouldnt be much of a problem.
Do I need to duck yet<TO class=inlineimg title=Biggrin smilieid="456" alt="" border="0" src="images/smilies/standard/biggrin.gif" flack???<img the all miss />:o
I'm ready,Go for it guys

Seeing Ern's Turnfest is done and dusted, I'm sure he won't mind us hijacking this thread for a while :U
My old man made himself the left handed lathe in the piccy here. It was actually universal 'cos there was a clutch lever both sides and it was driven through gearboxes so you had as many reverse speeds as you did forward - and a whole lot of noise - belts are much quieter :C
For myself, most of my techniques are the same as a not-lefty except bowl-hollowing. That is where the Stubby suits me 'cos I can get around it like a bowl-lathe but still have the benefits of a bed for spindle stuff.
