Bowl with Termites Help.

G'Day All Happy Australia Day. this Red Gum Blank spent the last 50 to 60 Years
as a stump under a house in Skipton Vic.The Termites have done a nice job on the wood I wasn't sure if it would stay togheter or fly
of and disintegrate. I decided to mount it on the lathe and turn it at a VERY SLOW
speed. After finishing the outside I wrapped musking tape to it for strength and proceeded to hollow out the inside of the bowl Very gently taking lite cuts.
I've left the wall a bit on the thick side.I tihnk it worked out OK.
What do you think?

... Chunky looks good too (although I would hardly call yours chunky) I like it, it has character. My wife likes that kind of thing so I turned a really old piece of yellowbox cut from the crutch of a tree lying in the paddock for about 50 yrs this evening. Still a bit damp inside so I will let it stabilize/ dry a little inside the house (too hot in the shed this week!!!!!!) and remount it later to finish it off.

Glad you still have all your fingers too:2tsup: You have to be really careful with all those voids.

most of the termite damage I've seen has been too great to do anything with :~ except replace the floor :o

Eliza I'm affraid I'll have to agree with Skew about cultivating Termites.
Having been on the receiving end of the damage termites can do to a house,
we had to replace two walls due to the little B---%#.:((

Good one :2tsup: maybe if you tucked the lip in nice and tight as it meets the main body of the bowl it would add crispness to the over all look. Hmm dunno if this makes sense. :U

Hi Hughie I know what you mean, But that would have been OK at the start of turning
before hollowing the inside when it still had a bit of strength.I'm affraid if I was to retun
it to the lathe it may not survive the "operation".:(
