my mother makes jewelry and has many earing's i made her a small cup with a lip on it to which i drilled holes in to allow earing's to hook into. i was happy with it at the time but now i know i can do better! so thinking more and i came up with a few ideas

this is a tree of the stuff and i think it could be a good seller but i dont care much for selling what i make (not yet)

ok and this is something that i want to make for a friend and yeah i like to make boxes lol

i have an idea for a necklace tree and you could put bangles on it but i cant draw it right now lol

if anyone wants to make some of these then i would love to see how they turn out :U
Patrick

Edit: oh and the lips of all the bowls and box will have holes drilled into them so the earings can be hooked in

Patrick...you've got some computer skills:2tsup: Are they done in Sketch-Up?

...BTW, now that you've shown your ideas, which are first rate, to the rest of the world, you'd better hurry and make hundreds of 'em before others do!!!!

Love them. The top one looks like a fountain - I really like the globe one though. I'm not ready for that yet!!!

i knew you would like them Eliza lol the cup would go well with your hair pins i think

just so you guys know none of this to scale its just to show general shape. the earing "tree" needs to be higher between each layer and i think the dishes should be a bit smaller to about 100-140mm in diameter, maybe 6mm deep. the box will be less round at the bottom and have a flat bottom i think 12mm deep. the lid will be hollowed out and not a tight fit, the final will be longer and wider so that it wont break when used a to pick up the lid. i will draw up new ones tonight so you guys can see latter

http://i366.photobucket.com/albums/oo103/Stag_hound27/wood%20working/ringbox2.jpg
this one is like one i saw a while back i think its a good one to make just remember that base needs to be wide enough so that it wont topple over when the earing's are unbalanced but in proportion to not look weird lol

It's a bird bath!!!! Only when you put the lid on, the birds get stuck. Then you heat it, and it becomes a cooker!

:)

Today I realised as I made keyrings that I was actually making teeny tiny Greek urns.

Now that's just showing off!

Guilty as charged, :- But when I'm not making something 'special' or to custom order, goblets and these lidded boxes are what I fill the time in with. I guess they're my version of your Hair Sticks.

And you forgot the carved quail!

Errrm... would you believe that it flew off when I opened the box? :innocent:

(I like the top one, what wood?)

Pittosporum Undulatum, classed as a noxious weed by most councils That's a sample of it next to the lidded bowl.

Nice skew :2tsup:

the finial of the top one reminds me of centre point tower (sydney tower)

how did you turn that little one? you would have had to use a nail or similar to get into something that small :?

Skew ChiDAMN!!
20th February 2009, 12:54 AM
Yeah, a concrete nail driven into a wood offcut for a handle and then ground sharp.

Yes. I'd believe anything. You haven't learnt that yet?

Yeah, a concrete nail driven into a wood offcut for a handle and then ground sharp.

So you were keeping that secret to yourself and making me BUY a set of miniature tools?

What else can I use?

It's hardly a secret. I've mentioned it often enough in the past that I tend to assume it's well known. :-

Concrete nails are the best for making small tools out of (IMHO anyway) as they hold a sharp edge pretty well, but ordinary bright nails will do the trick too if you don't mind sharpening every few minutes.

If I want to make a small hook- or angled-tool (eg. so I can undercut the lip inside one of those boxes) I'll use bright nails because I can hammer them into a piece of wood and then simply clamp the head in a vice and bend the nail to the angle I want. Clip the head & sharpen, et voila!

Being quick to make, I tend to throw 'em away at the end of the day but that's more because "I have more clutter than I need/want" rather than "I've worn them out."

Sorry Patrick... Hijacked Again! :D

lol thats ok i love the ones you made far out that is small ................latter ill post a pic of the small one i made. i made it ages ago and it was so frustrating arrrrrrrrr but im happy with it now its no bigger than a 50c coin and what got me started thinking about these boxes ..........i really like making them :U

as for using a nail well thats fine i like doing small stuff which is frustrating because i have 2 huge spindle gouges and only recently got a crap smallish one :(( now what i love using is a formed scraper egg shaped with the right side ground flat made from a small file that was made into a chisel! and now my form tool(i know but its not that big and its soooo handy) Eliza scrapers are soooooooooo good you will love them when you know how to use them :U .........now im at work i can get nice sized old high speed steel tools for some stuff i need to make :U have to give that a try soon anyway if i think of something new ill draw it and post it

thanks for reading everyone
