I have had some spruce burls for quite some time and did nothing with them because for some reason I don't find spruce very appealing so I decided to use one to waste some time and to experiment. I just kept cutting until the remaining bark seemed solid and the wall thickness was relatively thin. There wasa no final plan in mind. I fully expected it to end up bouncing off the walls in pieces or to have a tool catch at a critical time so the piece would become firewood therefore I did not plan well enough so I could safely finish the bottom. I'll do that by hand later. However , things went reasonably well and although I did not end up with anything spectacular, it was good enough to sand and put a bit of finish on.
Dimensions: about 85mm high x 120 dia

Quite nice. Amazing what we sometimes find in odd lumps of timber.

Such lumps of wood are always nice for doing free handturning, and to discover if it will surprise you, or disappoints you.
Well Oldiephred, this time it turns out in a nice simply bowl.

What they said. Sometimes, let the wood tell you what it wants to be, and accept the consequences. Nice.:2tsup:

Cheers,
