Well... I'll bear witness that has said, several times, that any tool with a sharp enough edge can be used for turning. :D

...that's right, Del Stubbs gave a seminar in Smithville, Tennessee way back when (cant remember the date) about using different "impliments" for turning. Using the hatchet head was the most dramatic and once Dell explained to us novites that it is nothing more than a skew chiesel on steroids, it made sense....and it's all in the way you use the tool.

Another chiesel he showed us was a gouge made from a piece of galvanized pipe, ground down much like a bowl gouge. It cut alright, but the b****y tube kept getting packed with shavings!!:~:D

Col Hemmings did a demo on a jewlers lathe at last years STWWS making a chess pawn using a hatchet I got the video one day may put it up somewhere.

Col isn't to well is now in respite home in Tamworth due to a heart condition

IIRC, the Benevolent Dictator once claimed to have used a shovel. In the thread about power planes, I think.
