Hi the BBQ and turn on at Ballarat is decided as 2nd May

i suggest a 9.30 or 10 am start and if requested bacon & eggs till 10.30am could be arranged.

That is not quite 2 weeks from now - please post requests for the agenda and i will make that up next week.

all welcome i will supply the BBQ, meat, sauce, bread, tea, coffee, biscuits and probably a Pav for desert. My daughters will make a salad or something. (in case TL and the wives want some)

This is open to all members of the forum and feel free to bring the wives & kids and make it a day in Ballarat.

i will be home friday and all weekend so if anyone wants to come around other days just ask.

When i was in Queensland at the Goldcoast Australia Day BBQ they ran a luckydip/prize draw that i would like to give a try - maybe Wendy (Ruffly Rustic) could explain that further)

Sorry no VL300 to play on but i'm sure will demo something on the best i have.

Cheers and all welcome.

I can't remember how it started, but for our South East QLD GTGs, everyone has brought along something woodworking-related to share. Sometime during the day, perhaps after lunch when everyone is too full to move much, we draw each person's name out of a hat and they get to pick something from the table. If there are still prizes left over, then round we go again...:D It's a huge amount of fun especially when everyone goes home with a "lucky door prize".

Thanks Wendy - pretty easy when someone who knows explains it.

I have plenty of wood to throw in if prises are short.

Hi David, how goes the planning, are there enough numbers? At this stage I'd like to go, just need to sort out some home details with the boss.

So the attendance is going to be a surprise but , David Mitchell, maybe Echnidna and a couple of others have indicated their interest.

So if it's back to a normal May day in Ballarat there is 2 fire drums and plenty of wood. (blackwood & Cypress)

So an agenda - well

Maybe a 10am start - earlier if you wish.

Hopefully Skew will do a goblet (if he turns up) - haven't seen one of them for a while -

Morning tea - i reckon scones & fruit cake should suffice for that

Finish the Goblet and maybe could give some tips/example on turning S&P grinders (making them the same) or table legs

Lunch - BBQ sausages, chops & steak - ok some salad just in case someone wants some.

Next the prize draw that Wendy described above (so anyone who has wood or tools or something they wish to give away bring it) and we will draw names from the hat and everyone gets to pick from the "pile of stuff"

Of course there will be a buy sell table - maybe the swap stuff could go in the draw (what do you think)

So input into this would be good - anything you want to see for the afternoon.

Oh yeah what do you have to bring - well for a start yourself would be good and plenty of stuff to talk about (no bulls&it allowed):no:

Almost forgot in the agenda the recording of this (http://www.woodworkforums.ubeaut.com.au/showthread.php?t=94517):D:D:rolleyes:

I think Noel mentioned he may come and led by Noel, Greg and i'm sure it would be a memorable moment.:2tsup::2tsup:

Any other takers - maybe as wheelinround (post 9) suggested a choir.:D:D

Or should we start the day with Waltzing Matilda??:U:q Maybe prior to lunch:q:?

I've been seeing a few posts recently on the subject of chatter/texturing tools and was wondering if a demo of both/either could be fitted into the agenda. If any forumites have texturing/chatter tools they could bring along I'd like to have a squiz.

The new ' BLADE" turned up for the bandsaw today so i figure there are quite a few blanks that i hope to have cut and then whoever wants can have a go at 'roughing" bowls.

There is beenatree, green silky oak, blackwood, wasatree, cypress, think some sort of poplar or elm(main street Ballarat, green) and others

Should be interesting to see the various shapes without the pain of sanding.

Just turn it down and put in the next bit of wood and start again.

Hello everyone.

I am completely new at all this woodworking.
I only signed up this week. But I have been reading the Forums for quite awhile.
I live in Sebastopol, Ballarat and would like to attend the bbq.
Do you have room for one very green, unlearned newbie?

If Glenn can talk the talk, no doubt he'll be in good company. Problem will be to get a word in edge-wise!

Please look after the new bloke as much as you all have looked after me. I've been turning off and on for almost a year and the learning curve is steep. I would urge you all to suggest tool-time (or wasting wood as likes to say) as the best cure for jitters with catches. There are work-arounds too, like using a decent gouge to turn beads rather than go straight for the dreaded skew.... But you all know that. Just let the Glenn now some of it.

No doubt it will be information over-load for a while.

And please Ern, don't turn Glenn into a tool sl#t like you did me. It's costly!

Ern and Co,

I take severe umbrance in being referred to as a tool whore. I am just a simple tool sl*t. And most of that addiction started with you lot!

The tool/chuck/sharpening accessories continue to breed like rabbits. I figure, it's just got to make up for my inability to turn wood correctly (eh ?).

Hi, David
Sorry, but we do not have anyone who can take photos in Victoria. Hopefully you can get someone to take them and then send the cd. The most important thing is to send the full-size files (typically 1MB+), not the web versions (5-80kB).
Regards, Steven

This is an email i received from the Australian Woodworker - so is there a person who is coming on Saturday who knows enough about photography/lighting to take photos for me and download onto my computer to burn a CD or burn a CD and send it to me so i can forward it to Steven.

There maybe a peice in the Mag on the competition. I am not asking for professional photos just good ones. I assure you the photographer will be recognised.

He has set a precedent for turners everywhere, he bought himself a Stubby lathe for his birthday :2tsup::2tsup::2tsup:

I have put some high resolution pictures on a web album. If you follow this link (http://picasaweb.google.com.au/greg.millen/20090502CalmsPlace#) you can see thumbnails of the competition items and some more pics of the days events.

Yep i give all you turners out there permission to go out and by a Stubby for yourself. It will stimulate the economy and give a lot of pleasure to yourself.

Also in answer to the "where's Ern" question i just got inside and checked my emails for the day and at 8.50am this morning i got one from Ern apologising for not being able to come.

Hope all is well mate and yep I GOT A STUBBY TOO.:D:D:D:D:D:D:D:D:D:D:D In fact if all goes well i will have 2 brand new ones in a year.

Whats that cliff a chuck for each set of jaws well what do you reckon then about a lathe for each chuck:o Sheer excess

PS in case you cant tell I'M EXCITED

Forgot but i'm back - Thanks Greg for photographing the Bowls - i will burn a CD and get them off to the magasine - hopefully you turners who participated in the Charity comp will get some recognition of your generosity.

David didn't get much time in on his new toy... but I should think that that changed shortly after the last bum was booted out the door. Thanks for having us David. :2tsup:

Groggy did a good job on the bowl photos; far better than my happy (waddya mean my thumb is in the way?) snaps.

gmack rough-turned his first bowl and took home a few pieces to practice what he learned. Enjoy!

I see the Stubby has a speed chart on it now. Rob C must be getting soft ;-}

Here's the url for the Stubby group: http://groups.yahoo.com/group/stubbygroup/

It's a fairly low traffic US-dominated group. The two Bills on it make bits and pieces for the Stubby and if you have a tech query the group is quicker than leaving messages with Omega.

Looking forward to seeing what you spin on the Beast.

The only stubbies were the two big toes of "Skew"
as he wandered around David's workshop barefooted.

Of all the places in Victoria to walk around barefooted
Ballarat would be the last. It can get mighty cold there
but somehow David looked to the gods and ordered

David you probably have a form of swine flu. :(

It a nasty strain called Stubby flu.:~

The only known cure is to immediately remove the offending cause from your shed and replace it with a soothing blue machine.

There will be no shortage of offers to remove the offending machine.:2tsup:
