Hi Ed,

Not clear from your post whether this is a combo which you have been running for a while which has now gotten dodgy, or whether this is a new arrival you are trying for the first time. If the latter, most likely the insert, replace it. (Could be the chuck thread running out too, but this is far less likely). In either case, solution is the same, take/send it back.

In the former case, I would suggest one of:

Lathe has taken one hell of a knock/dig, and bent the shaft.
Headstock bearing on the way out.
Perhaps the thread on the insert was not full match to lathe shaft, and under loading, it has deformed, and allowed the unit to cock. Do you have the insert seating on a nylon or fibre washer?

regards

Hi Ed,
2 things, have you been in touch with the Seller,
Ask Jim Carroll, www.cws.au (http://www.cws.au) He may have an answer for you, not sure of his Email : [email protected] ??Guessing a bit here, but it would be in the Adds of most wood magazines. I have never used a "washer" always Steel to Steel, keep them clean, & I use my 1/2in. knockout bar across the jaws to remove the chuck from the lathe. If you use the small tightening hole you will elongate those small holes. If you look around, you can find 2 Screwdrivers, cut the ends off, grind them sq., but I think you have the other type of tightening, prob. the hex type. Those are my thoughts, anyway.
Regards

Does the insert screw in all the way, so that the "hex head" is fully seated against the base of the chuck?

Or is there a small gap?

Apparently recent inserts have been made a smidgeon too long, so the business end of the thread bottoms out in the chuck before the insert is seated properly. The result may run nice and true for a time, but it only takes one good jam to screw things up.

I'll keep my fingers crossed for ya that it's something this simple... hence easily fixed.

Guys, I appreciate all your suggestions and persons to contact about this situation.

To answer some of what you said to check:

This is a new Super Nova with a 1 1/4x8 insert which was purchased in March
Upon receipt the chuck ran true with no blank attached
It has the hex insert
Using Channelock pliers to remove chuck from spindle
The insert does not seat all the way to the chuck body - approximately 1/8" gap
Chuck sat unused until last week when I started to turn some maple
Suspect the insert has now somehow deformed because it will not run true even with no blank attached
The spindle is OK - other chucks run true

I got back in touch with Craft Supplies today and got a satisfactory response from Roger Durst:

Thanks for the heads up on this problem. We are currently out of the 1 ¼ X 8 inserts but are expecting a shipment tomorrow or the next day. When they come in I can test then and some chucks to determine which is bad and what we need to send you.<o></o>
Thanks

Thanks Ern....must have glossed over the posts 'bout the inserts (been turning b@#%s-to-the-wall to get ready for a street fair in 3 weeks).

Just went back and read the posts...luck to you also to resolve the inserts situation.
