Question Where to buy carving wood in Melbourne's Western suburbs?

Hi, I've just started to get into wood carving but cant seem to find any places that sell good timber and not crap at Bunnings.

Can someone please point me in the right direction as to where to buy it and whats the best to carve for a beginner in Melbourne's Western Suburbs?

I've heard that Jelutong is good for a beginner but no one knows where to buy it.

    Thanks in advance!

Jelutong has a good reputation, so does campfor laurel. Other names excape me.

I suggest you ask for carving clubs and wood turning clubs in any wood-selling businesses.
In a round-about fashion, you'll meet the people who share your wood-buying interests.

Happened here to me when I wanted to buy steatite soapstone for carving.
I asked a local stone mason. Gave me the most obscure business name imaginable.
Canada has soapstone mining from coast to coast. All I can buy is from Brazil.

You would be surprised at what you can carve.

I have been 'playing' around with Acacia Baileyana (Cootamundra Wattle) which is reasonably hard, with some good results.

Merbau is good and easily found, and good value.

So, the recommendation is, to just try anything that comes in your path and see how you go.

    G'day Bob,
For Jelutong you could try Matthews Timber in Knoxfield or you can buy Jelutong either in store or on line from Carbatec who I believe are in the Springvale area. Do a Google for "The Woodsmith" if they're still around I have had them mail me a block of Jelutong .........
    Regards
    John
