    Default Carving A Mural

I'm considering carving a large mural say 2.4 high by 5 or 6 metres long.

I'm confident that macrocarpra is suitable as it has lower shrinkage than huon etc and is nice & light for handling as well as being a Kauri look alike.

I'm thinking of laminating panels say 1 metre wide that connect together to make the complete mural.

Do you think the back of each panel should be framed up in a similar manner to a table or can you suggest a better method of keeping it all from warping etc.

It should keep me out of trouble for a little while.

It'll be interesting to see if it works out or whether I have a years supply of chips for the garden.

will you use separate panels for smaller scenes or will this be one huge panel/one scene??

    Bob,
Are you attempting to do something similar to Greg Duncan's Wall in the Wilderness on a smaller scale?

FWIW, Silvio Apponyi made a mural of that size or more about 20 years ago for the State Bank (Santos) building in Adelaide. He has a website, maybe he could be convinced to give you some pointers.

It's possible to go either way into a diorama effect or as separate panels either of which could be equally effective.

Think I'll just start and see where it goes to.
I've got enough seasoned macrocarpra to do up to a 2.5 by 15 metre panel and more timber in the offing, but I need to build a decent workshop first so I probably am 3 months away from starting carving.

And the first carving will include a square rigger.
