The Desolation of Smug
This Dragon is a double sided relief carved from pittostrum. Finished with thinned polyurethane and wax. the stand with mirror is intended to allow viewing both sides. The dragon sits on a loose peg that allows picking up and handling.

Great job, Really nice crisp detail. Good to see pittosporum being used, I don't think is is widely appreciated by woodcarvers.

Impressive detail. As a long standing Tolkien fan it really appeals to me. Did you come up with the pattern yourself or can it be purchased from somewhere?

It is my design, I can send you the pattern if you wish. It's just the front of the dragon though, I drew the prospecting tools etc directly onto the timber. I have been beginning to wonder when I show people, if they are just politely ignoring a weak Hobbit pun with a bit of Ozymandias thrown in or it's too obscure and they really don't get it.
Thank you Whittling and Len for the kind comments.

Brilliant dragon, but a really weak pun.

Fantastic job David, detail, design and finish are top notch. Pittostum I have never heard of, had to look it up. Is that it's natural colour when finished? Perfect for a dragon.

Yes an excellent carving , so very clean & tight - well I thought it was a spelling mistake until I seen the look on his face !
Yep, I had to look up the wood species too.

Fantastic concept! Absolutely exquisite design, carving, finish and mounting. Your craftsmanship is unique. Well done! I am in awe!
Can I ask how long it took you to create this beautiful piece?

Thank you for your kind comments Featherwood. I can't say exactly how long as I was working on it on and off together with finishing a coloured pencil drawing, and calligraphy work and a pyrography work from scratch within about a month period in preparation for a local agricultural show. I did the dragon carving after realising that I wouldn't be able to finish on time with the other carving projects I'd started. I'm not good at time management.
