Finally was able to finish some carvings...
I attended the Renegade Woodcarving Rendezvous in Lebanon, Tennessee, USA last month. This is a week long instructional course with five members of the Caricature Carvers of America as instructors. The students spend one day with each of the five, carving one of the roughouts that that particular instructor has made available. A great way to observer master caricature carvers at work and learn some new techniques. I had to finish the Coca-Cola Santa a customer had ordered after I got back home from Tennessee, so I was not able to finish and paint the carvings from the class until this past week. Here are the results.
Claude
Uncle Sam, carved from a hillbilly roughout with Mitchell Cartledge on Day 2. Uncle Sam is 250mm tall, basswood, acrylic paints.

On Day one, I carved with Chris Hammock. These are called Bar Flys. Chris makes a small bar and sets these characters on the bar. Basswood and acrylic paint.

Day three was spent with Gary Falin carving this Santa. Santa is basswood, and about 175mm tall.

Day four was with Rich Wetherbee. I carved this little bear in the morning. He's dancing with joy because he just noticed he was next to a large glass of...apple juice...yeah... I'll call it apple juice... Basswood and acrylic.

Day four afternoon, I carved this bear. The original was called Bossy, but I thought I saw something different in the roughout. This is an Uncle Sam bear saying "I want you!"

Day five, the final day, I carved with Floyd Rhadigan. This jester is colored in Mardi Gras colors, is about 150mm tall, and was the most difficult of any of the carvings I did. Getting the knives and gouges into some of the areas was quite a challenge. Basswood and acrylics. The crossed eyes were intentional...
