Thanks for the welcome. The wood is part of an old Elm tree that came down in a hurricane. This is a drift wood I found along MobileBay</ST1. I have never identified the wood. It was naturally dark the finish is just tung oil.

I love that black wood. I hope that it wasn't sitting in an oil slick. It looks like its a bit of root which may help to explain the colour.

Carving Tools.
Hi CV3,
I'm interested in your Chisels in the back ground. The couple near the carved head look like Dastra, but the ones with the hoops on the heads, I have never seen before.
Yes, I do a bit of Carving if you can call it that. Spoons mainly to sell.
Our Moderator, he's the one who Carvings you should see.
In May we have a Carve-In, a bit over 60 Ks's - 30 miles to you, for me to get there.
About 52 people will be there, From Fri. 1.45pm. - Sun 2pm.
We really have a Great Weekend. I'm about to get my Paperwork to fill in, send my money, approx. A$130. I'm not really sure of the correct date.
The Volunteer Tutors, also pay, & that is their wish.
f anyone is interested, I will have Details Next Week, but you will be on the Short List more than likely.
BTW, CV3, that is great work.
Regards,
issatree.
