Default Hi All, New to woodcarving interested in relief and bas carving. Lessons in Brisbane?

Hi everyone, im new to this whole woodcarving thing. I live in Brisbane, Australia.

Im interested in doing relief carving and bas carving to start with. I currently dont have any tools, however i am looking at purchasing a beginners set from carba-tec in the not too distant future. At the moment i am just watching alot of videos and reading alot of books and forums trying to get my head around the basics.

Can anyone point me in the direction of any carvers in the Brisbane area that are willing to give lessons, or any short courses to get a better grasp of the basics?

    Thanks everyone!

Edit: A bit of background about me. Im 27, qualified cabinetmaker of 5 years (mainly kitchen and laundry renovations), a lot of the tafe stuff for my apprenticeship was furniture making, (cabriole leg chairs, cabriole leg tables, crystal display cabinets, etc) I thoroughly enjoyed the furniture making rather than the cabinetmaking, which led me to quit. I am now a fitter and turner, i love machining and welding. Fabrication is the best! I live in a small unit and dont have a workshop as such, so ive just built myself a workbench and im keen as mustard to start woodcarving!!

I would be in pain to get you carvers in your area from France, but with that background in woodwork, books and videos, I can't see anything wrong to give it a try by yourself.
But someone closer may help !

I think you are right in wanting to get lessons in carving... at least initially.

The big problem with learning from scratch on your own is the safety angle. Books and videos can tell you what needs to be done but they can't cover all of the contingencies of the 'how to do it'. That's where having an experienced person at your elbow makes a big difference when you are first getting started. Once you have the basics under your belt its largely a matter of how keen you are as to how fast you grow.

Having said that, your recent training in related fields gives you a 'leg up' in that respect so you might manage on your own. It will take longer but you'll get there.

Brisbane is a pretty active center for wood carving. I'll be surprised if somebody can't put you on to a club or school in your area.

Thanks for all the feedback! For now I will probably just have a crack at it myself and see how I go. I have a relief carving for beginners Ebook which has a few basic lesson i plan on following and then i'll go from there.
