Thread: Humpback whale

Ha the "little requests" . Only last week I had to turn down a fully populated Noahs' ark , " just like the one I seen on the antique road show last week"!

All the same it is nice to carve things for people that you know are wanted & will be appreciated , you did a great job on this Rob in capturing the slow lumbering sprit of it , the "watery" choice of wood was perfect .

Lots of them along our west coast up here.
You did succeed in capturing the poetry in their motion, their body shape.
Also, you weren't compelled to copy the photo with any degree of precision.
That has always had great appeal to me.

I find that they are so big, there's no need to hurry!
Except:
Some researchers from the University of British Columbia used sonar
to track the underwater activity just before they breach and fall back into the ocean.
Apparently, the whales have to do better than 50kph underwater!

Thanks Mike, I'm not surprised you knocked the fully populated Noah's ark job Ha Ha, that would have about a 2 year job, I'm not sure some people know whats involved. I'm becoming a bit of a sucker for little requests but I know this girl will cherish this.

RV, This is the first year people have been able to swim with Humpbacks at Ningaloo but under strict conditions. One of those conditions is to stay a certain distance from them but the humpbacks are so playful apparently it's hard to do they keep coming over to say hello

Hey Rob, only carved a little one so far in camphor laurel, it was fun except I had a bl**dy heart attack while finishing it.............it nearly finished me off! Apart from the heart attack and two stays in hospital later, I really enjoyed carving it. It's lovely wood to carve. I've been carving in Huon since though, as I'm a bit nervous to go back to the camphor laurel Maybe soon.

Thanks David, She has seen a picture of it and loves it, she's in Canada at the moment and is bringing me some soap stone from there to have a go at carving, so at least this one is a bit of an exchange I guess you would receive many "little requests" for you wonderful love spoons, I need to start charging them at least to cover the wood etc, they might get the hint.

I really like that Germaine, quirky unique little creature, isn't the grain great on Camphor Laurel, you mentioned your heart attack on Facebook to me, hope you have all the stents in place now and getting back to normal but don't worry I doubt it was smell of the wood that gave you it but I no expert. I had a bit of a head cold carving the whale but the Camphor smell cleared my nose pretty good. Look forward to seeing what you do next.
