Kangaroo
I was asked by a friend of mine who looks after orphaned Joey's if I would have a crack at carving a kangaroo, I agreed not really knowing what I was getting myself into. After two failed attempts to do a standing version I decided a lying down roo might be a bit easier. Well it was still bloody hard and there is plenty of faults but I aint doing another one.
The roo is in Huon pine stained and the base is a slice of jacaranda, the rocks are Western red cedar which are remnants of one of my standing roo attempts. Hope she likes it.

Top marks for effort mate! You've got my unqualified admiration for taking it on... and even more for being willing to share your efforts.
I've never had the courage to try more than just a head but I've wanted to have a go at just that pose for a while now. I've been trying to collect enough photos to try this but I haven't had much success. Probably need to go out to a wildlife park and take some myself.

It's pretty faithful to the clay model Rob!
By the way, how do you keep your chisels so spotless?

Thanks for the comments folks, Featherwood, your right, it is a hard subject and I won't be in a hurry to try another one but it was good learning curve. RV, you must be close to finishing a few, look forward to seeing them.
Whittling, I took a load of pictures at my friends place of her kangaroos but they were all standing shots, I got the lying down images from google.
I just had too much trouble with the standing version, little front arms hanging loose skinny hind legs etc etc, I snapped the head off one and split the other in half somehow. The lying down version eliminates some of those problems. I had trouble with ears as well, they are too small, I broke one in half and couldn't repair it so had to cut them down a bit, other problems were the legs and tail I guess.
Raav, If your taking about that pfeil gouge in the picture its brand new, slowly building up a set of new chisels. How's the exhibition work coming on?
