    Default Kookaburra hiking pole

I recently got hold of a piece of Horizontal Scrub. 3 metres long and 70mm diameter. I figured ideal for 2 - 1 piece hiking poles Having cut it in half and formed the shank it became obvious that the borers I hoped to lose in the reduction had other ideas so change of plan.
Ended up with a 1 long piece - use as yet undecided, 1 medium length piece which will be the shank on a future stick and this 'topper' . The remains of a side twig in the centre of the bird's back really spoiled the look of it so I had a go at colouring. I'm not sure I like the result but that may be poor technique as opposed to a bad design idea.
The wood is beautiful to work with. I've never used Horizontal before but will definitely be looking for more for future use. The collar is Blackwood and the shank Tas oak.

    Huonphil.

You have selected my favorite birds as a subject. The colour might not exactly match the ones flying around but it still is a Kookaburra.

Love the through going into this piece.
