    Default Little Octopus in Huon

Just finished this little octopus about to eat a scallop. I found the huon to hold the detail I wanted really well. I really could have done with some micro chisels though. I've been window shopping on the internet. I like the look of the Dockyard 1.5mm micro chisels. Does anyone know if they are any good? Can anyone recommend a good brand of micro chisel? I like the small handles of the Dockyard....think they would be easier for me to handle.
    Thanks

Beautiful piece of work Featherwood, isn't Huon a pleasure to work with? I've got a few Flexicut tools, they seem readily availiable in Australia and may suit your needs: Carving Tools - FR804 Micro-Palm Set « Flexcut Tool Company

You might find looking up 'Ukibori' opens up some possibilities too.

Thanks Springwater. Huon is my most favourite wood to carve. I looked at the flexicut chisels at the WWWShow nearly bought them but thought I might look at all options (brands) first. Been caught out impulsive buying before!
Yeh...isn't ukibori fantastic. I bought a couple of Netsuke books at the WWWShow (as well as a TON of huon) and it's shown in one of them. It's an amazing technique.

Thanks Corbs. Wow a carver nearby...I'm about half an hour out of town.

I'm not a carver, just saw it trolling through the new posts. I enjoy turning but do a little bit of cabinet making for myself and friends when I have the need or can be bothered.

    I'm in town

Can I ask how long, hands on, this took to produce this realistic piece of art?

Nice work indeed. The occy is very fine. I am wondering however if you might give the scallop some grooves to differentiate it texturally?

    Carry on.

Hi Jamarpa, didn't keep track, the actual cuting out and carving...maybe a day or so. I then carried him around in my pocket for a week with a few small pieces of sandpaper... sanding him when I got the chance. The sanding actually took longer than the carving. I actually do quite a bit of shaping with the sandpaper as I go. The huons good for that!

Thanks Raav. Actually I did make the grooves on the scallop on top but didn't like the look so I sanded them off and just left very small indentations. Because he's so small the grooves overpowered the look. I should have taken WIP photo's. Will next time.

    You're the author.
For what it's worth, I've spent the past few days making a crate, and I'm tired etc etc. But your work made me want to go back out and carve a bit.
