Thread: Looking for brass poles for carousel horses?

Hardenfast (now there's a mixed blessing ) I can't help you but I am instantly reminded of something I saw recently, and I apologise to all if it's on this forum, but I've done a search and can't find anything.........

You are on a horse, galloping at a constant speed. On your right side is a sharp dropoff, and on your left side is an elephant traveling at the same speed as you. Directly in front of you is a galloping kangaroo and your horse is unable to overtake it. Behind you is a lion running at the same speed as you and the kangaroo. What must you do to safely get out of this highly dangerous situation?

Brass poles, there are some suppliers that sell to bars (pubs) for footrails, I have seen some that are ornate, like the traditional "twist" pattern that I think you might be looking for...

Hi During recent years i have carved a few carousel horses based on versions carved in the 1930s in the U.S.A but about half full size .With repeated searches on the net i have never come across anyone carving these type of horses in Australia (there are numerous toy rocking horse makers) and as such i don think there is any company in Australia that would stock what you require .They are available in the U.S.A which is the home of carousel horses with many peple carving them as also painting reproductions in plastic materials. For my horses i turn a post of the required diameter and paste a piece of paper around same which has been marked with lines for the twist and start carving .When finished you can finish with gold leaf,or gold wax or gold paint . When building up horses i leave a tapered square socket hole in the belly and this way the horse can be removed from the pole if necessary for transport etc . If your horse has no hole you may have to consider a flange of sorts

Hi, I have been carving carousel horses for 20 plus years based on the Gold Coast. A google search of "Carousel Horses Australia" will reveal a few carvers of various quality, myself I carve full size carousel horses based on German, American and English masters. Like Carouse Carver I also carve the poles and use 2 pack paints I differ slightly in attachment, While still in the lathe I bore a 12mm hole 150-200mm deep up into the base of the pole. I leave 75mm at the pole base uncarved use a hole saw of the same diameter bored into the wither to take the pole then bore a 13mm hole down through the body, I then epoxy a threaded 12mm building cyclone rod into the pole and insert, cut rod to suit and use chrome cap nut and washer to tighten. Do not glue so it can be removed for transport.
Australia can claim one of the worlds most eminent authorities on carousel horses, Patricia Mullins lives in Melbourne she wrote a carousel horse bible called The Rocking Horse- A History Of Moving Toy Horses 1992. Her company restored the Luna park carousel and Melbourne Zoo merry go-round.
