WOW is indeed the only superlative I can think of too. How many hours does a work like this take, and what tools are used?

Thanks all- 1132 hours , only hand tools for the carving -with a task like this you really understand the reason for the bent & short bent gouges!

Fantastic Ivan, the patterns repeat without being repetitive, what timber did you use?

They use them for the Holly Week processions , with figures of saints mounted on them . Timber is cedar (is this the name in English?) , slightly stained , just a bit more than it's natural color. Here:

This is the only thing good I find in religion, Ivan. Most of the art it supports is crap, but it paid for Michelangelo's work and now it allows you to do these beautiful things.
That you could do it in "only" 1132 hours amazes me. When you say "only hand tools for the carving" I assume you mean that the rough shaping was by router, as you explained before, but even so...

No , the only place I used the router was the ends of the "poles" they use to wear it - these pieces had to be attached later , and the precision in size was a "must". The rest is out -and - out hand work- well, after I did the piercing with a drill and a jig-saw , of course

Well, router, jigsaw, whatever, we are understood on the basic process. The point I was making is that, if I am not totally hopeless at estimating the size of that thing, you have been carving about 20 square metres of intricate detail in 1132 hours. Which means that the ratio fast professional (you)/ slow amateur (me) is a factor of 10.
And we have not even touched on the quality ratio.
A word of advice to all other fellow carvers (not sculptors ): Artesano must be an inspiration to us, not a goal, otherwise we will be disheartened and give up.
In the more whimsical field of abstract sculpture, we can continue deluding ourselves.

Artesano, that is beautiful and inspirational work. Too much woodwork nowadays lacks adornment of any description so when you see someone go the effort it really gets your attention.
