Poor Yorick 2
A while back RAAV posted a superb carving of a human skull (modified for cycling helmets but it was the face that interested me). I've done small skulls in the past as 'knob' grips for walking sticks but Raav's work made me realise just how amateurish my efforts were.
There's nothing like a challenge..... so I fished out my old skull pattern and had another go. Below is the result. I paid particular attention to the teeth this time which I felt was the major weakness of my earlier attempts. The height from chin to crown of the skull is about 37mm so there wasn't much room to work the fine details. I got it as good as I feel my current abilities would let me. I'm much happier with this attempt then with previous ones. Still not as much detail around the jaw hinge as it is a stick handle and I felt that the cheek arch would be too fragile if I went all the way through.
I've posted a photo of a previous effort for contrast. This is the 2012 effort.
Here's the latest...
While its not in Raav's league, I'm please with the improvement. I call him 'Poor Yorick 2'.

Nice that the wood allows for some detail. "Hominims" they are, both.
In #2, I like the faint suggestion of a smile in the profiles of the tooth geometry in the jaws.
