Default Trying a different approach to stick making

Thought I might try to carve a figure or face straight on a shaft ie. without a head joined on, or grown on as a natural integral part.
They are a fairly standard size shaft of 1 1/8" or 28mm in diameter, it turned out to be proper miniaturist tiny pen knife work which takes ages longer than if it had been a sensible size but that is my kind of thing.
The Hazel wood was at it's limits to take detail this small but it is is a lovely carving wood. Cheers Mike

Nice sticks! Lots of good detail on a small carving!

Have to vote for the owl. The barring on the tail feathers was the clincher. Good designs, the both of them.
Do you have a plan for finishing to keep hand grime off the carvings?

Thanks RV. no, they are finished with high quality teak oil which will hold up just fine for years. In a month or so time it will harden & buff up to a soft sheen.

Very nice Mike, hard to pick between them, they both have great detail for miniatures. I take it they are more of a hiking stick than everyday walking stick.

Thanks for looking & your comments everyone.
Yes Rob it is hiking stick/pole length .

I'm not sure that it is worth the time though to just use the diameter of the stick for carving , I might be better off putting a bigger top on even if only slightly bigger it would allow different types of wood & greatly expanded design possibilities - but then when you look at the stick as a whole it seems more subtle & less showy which is exactly how I feel when I'm out for a quiet walk , Hmmm...........
