Hi
I am a framing carpenter by trade. I specialise in conventional framing, i've dealt with new built, renovations and extensions...... outwards! lately i am getting a few request for going upwards but ive never done this before and want to know how the flooring is lay? if anyone on here can help, it ll be great or can guide me to somewhere to get more info. I am in Sydney.
Is the floor joist lay parallel and against the ceiling joist? flat on the wall etc?
or is anyone doing this at the moment. i know is an odd request but i am keen learn all aspects of carpentry.

Are you sure you mean 2nd floor? Normal terminology is: Ground floor, first floor, second floor, etc.
To answer your question: Upper floor joists are usually run parallel and between existing ceiling joists. This eliminates unnecessary increase in building height. It is good practice to pack the joists to clear the ceiling lining below to avoid vibration damage to existing plaster.
