Default #4 Dunlap hand plane cap iron problems

I purchased a vintage Dunlap hand plane of eBay and restored it but when I flatten the cap iron to sit on the iron face it still has a significant gap on the sides but the middle is sitting fine. I spent well over 2 hours yesterday morning trying to flatten it and it seems what ever I do I'm still left with a gap between the cap iron and iron. Please can someone offer some suggestions on this and a better way of doing so? I'm using a cheap Amazon diamond stone with some honing oil.

Get out a hammer and tap it into shape. Yes, I'm serious, I've done it with old Stanley cap irons and it works a treat.

BTW, diamond plates should be used with water, not oil.

If you're looking to flatten surfaces on some un-loved tools, I'd suggest 120 or even 80grit sandpaper stuck to a flat reference. 'Coarse' diamond stones are still about 350grit+ and get finer with use, so they'll take a long time to flatten something that's really out of whack.
