    Default Abranet question

Do the Abranet mesh sanding sheets stick to standard hook and look backed sanders?

If not, is it possible to purchase the appropriate backing sheet.

I also see there are a range of sheets available from 70 x 125 up to Bout 115 x 400mm?
For woodies that have hand sander versions of the Abranet what size sheet do you find works best.

    Thanks very much.

    Hi Bob.

I have switched to Abranet, but only have 150 sized sanders. The dust collection is better than Festool's already very good paper. The discs seem to last longer than Granat paper, which means I have enough for 1.2 lifetimes.

    grumble grumble not happy Jan.

2 weeks ago I stupidly ordered sanding discs through Ebay, i purchased 80, 120, 240 and ready to throw in the bin. Granted the velcro on my (old) Festool sander needs replacing but they just dont last.
Cant afford to but I think some of these Abranet might be heading my way.

Thanks Jack, is yours a hand sander and what width (and length) do you use ?

Left knee's shot cant even stand up in the shed for more than a few mins. Restricted to being seated I'm having a crack at designing a 3D printed hand sander . The design has just about variable everything length/width/height. holes size and spacing, different size vac outlet etc. Should be good for loads of testing and experimenting.

I'm also thinking of incorporating a clip on/off base so grits can be swapped by swiping bases thereby protecting the hook and loop master. I'll post some design pics when I get a bit closer.

    I have this one

    Amazon.com

It uses 6” discs, has velcro on three sides so that you can change the orientation of the disc and actually use the sides for fine work.

Thanks Greg that's very useful - I like the idea of potentially running the mesh around the sides.
Could be an alternative design for teh base.

Does the mob have a name? or do I go down a back alley in Freo and ask for the "Mob"?

This is a quick and dirty 3D printable Open SCAD design I mocked up this arvo for a shop vac extracted hand sander.
Yeah I know they're not very expensive but this is more challenging fun even if somewhat frustrating.

It's basically 3 parts, base, top and vac spigot.
I programmed everything except the egg code which I found on Thingiverse - its actually in two halves and normally printed with the cut halves down to avoid support but I want to print its attached so my print will need to use supports. Getting the egg to reorient and relocate above the top was the thing that took the longest
The program is set up so that you can print any one our all of the 3 pieces.

The vacuum spigot could directly attached to the top but I'm considering a spigot with some sort of a bayonet fit and then different size spigots could be printed to suit different vac nozzle sizes.

The base is separate because I'd like to have several bases (with different grit sizes)that clip on and off then base. This would save wear and tear on the hook and loop component when removing and replacing different grits. Still need to work out a simple clip on mechanism - should not be too hard - I have a bag type clip design that I can probably pirate.

Everything can be adjusted, length, width, height, handle size, location and profile, top tapers, hole sizes, location and numbers. I just need to settle on a mesh size and then I can have a crack at printing it.

Question - was thinking of generating some small holes in the top like I've seen on some other sanders. What do you reckon?

Note that you are attaching this sander to a shop vacuum, Bob. I think that is really important; keep us posted.

I have used abrunet on a ROS for a few years now. My experience, compared to 3M white aluminium oxide discs is:
    • Abrunet is a little faster and has significant longevity over 3M when using the dust bag on the sander, and
    • Abrunet is a lot faster and has a lot of longevity over 3M when using the shop vac attached to the sander.

I haven't done a scientific test so I cannot quantify those figures. I think the finish is also a little better and for some reason I prefer to use Abrunet. Sanding is not my favourite task!
