Adelaide Forumites Lend Me Your Secrets
So the Stinkette and I have been residents of Adelaide for a few months now. After spending the first three months stuck with a single garage that was so packed of woodwork stuff that I couldn’t move we bought a lovely place with a new double garage. After I unpack I will be ready to get back into the swing of things.
I am in need of fellow Adelaide Forumites to lend me there little secrets on where to go for everything woodwork / home renovation related. So far there hasn’t been too much that has jumped out. I know of the regular woodwork machinery places like Carbatec but I am more so looking for good timber supplies, plywood supplies, steel supplies, demolition yards etc.
In Geelong there was a demolition yard which didn’t really specialise in anything but it was possible to get cheap ply, mdf, steel and treated pine. It was the sort of place that was a bit of a lucky dip of what they may have in the yard at the time. Sometimes you could get everything you needed and other times nothing at all.
I saw an ad the other day for Paramount Browns which looks like an interesting place. Other than that there is a strange little place on South Road which I haven’t had a chance to look through yet. I haven’t really seen any specialised timber outlets.
I have also done a goolge search which bought up a few things but it would be good to get first hand advise of places to go where they don’t treat you like and idiot and charge well over what things are worth.
Cheers in advance.

Welcome Sir Stinky...Paramount Browns certainly comes to mind re your request...Otto's timber has many exotic timbers, but you will pay big dollars for them...other than that, you are fairly limited as to what you want.
There are several salvage yards on Hanson and Wingfield Roads..(northern ends) that may help. but other than that your search may be limited. Regards..........ALIf your not confused you dont know whats going on!

Yes, unfortunately that seems to be the case, Sir. Welcome to our backwaters. There is not much going as far as recycling timber is concerned, my sparse attempts convinced me that the price to value ratio is poor even if you find anything. It is years since I last bought from them, but the best value I got was for new timber from a wholesaler in Port Adelaide. I remember posting here their address a couple of years ago, can't remember it now but could probably find it if you are interested. For metal stuff Paramount Brown is ok.
And if you are interested in a genuine 1920's Baltic Pine dunny door let me know, I kept the one which was in the house I bought 32 years ago because it is a piece of historic and cultural significance.

Hello Stinky!
I've been here a few times Bought a huge Oregon beam for $120
This mob are down my way and are always good for a scrounge.
Alas, we are, as others have said not so well off timber wise as all of the other states! The secret to creativity is knowing how to hide your sources.

As tankstand said rural salvage and de youngs are about the two best places we have here, they are also about 30 km apart so you will get to see a bit of the suburbs

I recall members in Sydney tour their neighbourhood on those rubbish turn out days and sometimes hit a jackpot.
Dont they do them in Adelaide?woody U.K.

Not to sure about all Councils but at least around here you seem to book in a hard rubbish collection from what I can tell. As such there isn't piles of goodies on the nature strip just awaiting collection.
My search is more for general stocks such as ply, mdf, steel etc.Now proudly sponsored by Binford Tools. Be sure to check out the Binford 6100 - available now at any good tool retailer.

Actually doors are the easiest to collect from the hard rubbish collection, a lot of people renovate and the first thing they do is replace the internal doors.
Picked up 4 two weeks ago from one of those booked collections as I was driving past and the local council starts their collection on the 10th of next months so I won't have too much problems.
Btw John a couple of years ago when I went to totally insulate my workshop I used about 50 of them collected in two weeks from the same source.
Peter.
