The Jet as the other two are just toys. Have a look at the robustness of the Jet and its sanding width compared to the other two. I have the Jet 22-44 (it sanded my fingers back to the bone a couple of years ago).

Darren,
I have been looking around for a drum sander as well and my research has led me to the Jet 22 44 being the better of the sanders.
Have finally settled on buying a used one (they don't come around too often) but have one lined up.

Darren,
I to have the 22-44 its a great machine, I bought it @ 4 years ago secondhand I have had no problems with it (other than a removalist breaking the main arm). The belts are easy to change.

Dust extraction on these machines is a necessity not an option. I have the Jet. Brilliant.

Do NOT buy the Carba-Tec one. I bought one of those and the small drive motor was always getting so hot that I couldn't touch it. It eventually gave up the ghost and I bought the Jet one instead. Apples and Oranges.
The Jet has been through a flood and after I changed the bearings it is still a great machine.Bob Willson

Picked up the Jet 22 44 Drum Sander yesterday...today I'll make some dust just to give it a try.
It's a heavy bugger, well made with lots of cast iron.

Try to take only an amount equal to a maximum of 1/4 turn of the handle at a time. Any more than that tends to overload things and the timber burns.
On many Australian hardwoods you will need speed the timber through with very light cuts indeed as otherwise the belt will become all gummed up with resin due to local heat build up; and then you will get dirty brown skid marks all along the timber and you will then need to clean the belts before any further sanding can be done.
The belts for these sanders are very expensive. I would suggest that you make an end piece template and then cut your own belts from suitable larger stock that can be bought from an abrasives manufacturer.Bob Willson

Thanks for that info Bob,
DO you mean fast or slow speed for the Aussie Hardwoods.
I do intend to buy rolls of paper and use a template. I wll use the belt that is in it at the moment and cut a MDF template.
Do you know the approx length off hand of the belt...is it 1m or longer. If I buy 25m rolls ..do you get 25 belts out of it?
