Advice" Luban Low Angle Plane
Hi,
I got a Luban Low Angel Jack Plane. Unwrapped it, got all the preserving oil off it. I gave the blade the tiniest of a micro bevel at 30 degrees. I went to set up the blade and found it was favouring the right side. I moved the adjuster thing to the right to bring the cut over towards the left. I kept moving the adjuster over to the right and the best I get is it mostly cuts central, but prefers the right side. I have the adjuster all the way to the right with no more adjustment.
So is there something that I should be doing? other than buying a Veritas . Should I be sharpening the blade in a certain way or what, or ringing Timbercom where I bought it from.
Thanks in advance

Is The cutting edge square to the blade sides, if not, square it up and have another go, should be square out of the box but a lot of things that should be are not ,also make sure the blade is sitting flat on the frog

The cutting edge is square. Gave the blade a lite touch on the stones is a sharpening jig and the polish was flat across the blade. Also, the blade only cuts full width when its lateral adjustment is fully to the right. ?????

Ring Timbecon as a prelude to sending it back, you never know there might be a known problem. It sounds like there could be a problem with the machining of the plane body.

I rang them and they were very helpful. We haven't quite pinned down what the problem is. They have offered to take it back, but I just want it to work so we have agreed that I'll try to work out what's going and if I haven't got it working for me then they will arrange it's return.

Another thought is the frog set square most likely has adjustment screws

There are a number of reasons that it cuts better on one side of the plane:
- The plane iron protrudes more on one side. - use the lateral adjuster at the back (which you have done) and test it by running a thin strip of scrap timber of both sides and make sure they have the same resistance.
- The blade had been sharpened unevenly. How did you sharpen your blade? - test the sharpness of your blade by slicing along a piece of paper. Is the blade sharp evenly along the edge?
If it doesn't solve the problem. Upload some photos and show us how the plane is behaving strangely

Any comments gratefully listened to. Note lateral adjuster at full tilt to cut in the centre. Many times I don't get a full with cut with that full tilt to the right adjustment.Last edited by deerndingo; 21st April 2020 at 09:14 PM. Reason: Additional info

The 2nd photo shows that a curl of shaving was coming out of the middle. -> it seems to mean that the blades are protruding the most in the middle and since the lateral adjuster at the back does appear to be in the neutral position. However, the gap in the mouth (the 1st photo from the right) seems to to have unequal width. Can you adjust the mouth plate so that the gap is even? Also, can you take the iron out of the plane and inspect it to see if it's square.

The photo shows the adjuster fully to the right to obtain that central scroll. The mouth plate does not "square" the blade. The blade is square as per an engineering square.

There is no lateral adjuster on this plane. The only adjustment that is available is by tilting the blade on the blade bed. If the blade itself is square, as you've already stated twice that it is, then you're right and there is something seriously amiss with the manufacturing. Send it back. It seems pointless to continue here when people are giving you advice about frogs and lateral adjusters when this plane doesn't have either. The adjustable mouth won't have any effect on the bedding of the blade and it appears that it's the machined bed that the blade rests on that is the problem.

I don't have one of these planes, though I thought the Luban has a Norris style adjuster (depth and lateral adjustment), but the Lie Nielsen low angle jack only does depth adjustment and a hammer is used to make lateral adjustments. In any case, the mouth opening in the third photo looks anything but parallel. It looks wider on the right hand side in the photo. Possibly because the plane body wasn't properly seated in their jigs when they ground the sole of the body flat. If the "frog" and the sole of the plane are in two different planes across the width of the plane, it will force you to make massive lateral adjustments to get the leading edge of the blade inline with the sole.

Yeah. I'm thinking the that the base the blade sits on is not square to the base.
