I have one from a couple of years ago, it seems to do an OK job at a good price!

We have the Digital Infra-Red Thermometer and it's great. We use it mainly when camping to ensure the ice chests are at the right temperature for the food in it and cooking meat on the webber.

Just picked one up. Long queue, long time to get out of the car park, got home, fitted the batteries. Dead as a dodo
Don’t you just hate that?

I got lucky - only had to wait for one other person at the register, no problems car parking, and it's working so far!

All’s well. One dead battery.
I’ll try it out tomorrow.

How does this work as a moisture meter?

Being a sharp prong/pin type, I would guess conductivity/resistance. I lean towards resistance as this is the usual method for pin type and there are two lots of test/calibration terminals in the lid.
The “T” one measures 9.8M ohm so call it 10M ohm - this should cause the display to go off scale and blink when the pins are touched to the terminals.
The “B” one measures 240K ohm and should cause the display to measure 19% +-1%.
The instructions say to touch the material but do not force the pins into it.
On a side note, the recommended orientation of the pins is along the grain. This is not in the Aldi instructions.Last edited by Lappa; 10th June 2018 at 01:16 PM. Reason: side note

Ah ha ... there are two different meters being sold! The one is for temperature, which my wife purchased for me a year ago - and then I scratched my head trying to work out how it could measure moisture content. I assumed it was a mistake with advertising!

Never knew this, but it stands to reason it could be beneficial for a more accurate reading. As a result of reading this, I went out to the shed to check a bowl I turned yesterday. To say it was, wet turned, is an understatement, all I was told was that it was a gum tree of some kind, possibly a red gum, from a friend of my neighbour, who is American.
To his delight when I carried this wet turned bowl to his place yesterday, he couldn't quite believe how red it was, how wet it was and how heavy it was. Anyway, I decided to check out my Aldi moisture meter (older model than what is currently on sale). I tried along the grain and across the grain. There are two readings and there was a definite consistency, in that, any reading along the grain, always read a bit higher .
Pictures show the bowl, which is from a tree felled in the storms late last week, apparently chopped up on Friday and turned by me on Saturday (yesterday).
Mick.
