Aluminium Jointer Extension Table - Minimax, Felder, Aigner
As per another thread, I recently purchased a Minimax FS41E Combination Jointer-Planer. I did so in order to build a larger table, 3.2m in length, and hopefully more larger furniture pieces moving forward.
The machine has 2.0m jointer beds (1m each) but I wanted more support as 3.4+m 35kg boards are going to be hard enough to manage as it is, but i've never had good experiences with roller stands.
Both Aigner and Felder make off the shelf 1000mm outfeed tables, however the Felder was unavailable for 2 months, and the Aigner did not look particularly robust to me so I decided to make my own. Mine is similar to an outfeed made by Sapherion in another thread (will add link here later).
I purchased some heavy duty 8 series aluminium extrusion 160mm x 40mm for the table, along with a 40 x 40 for the support leg, a pivot hinge with locking lever, two additional locking levers and some nuts, bolts and grub screws. I already had a length of 38 x 38mm square 6000 series aluminium. Total cost sans the 38mm square aluminium was $430- . This compares with $795- for the Felder and $400 for the aigner both shipped.
I machined up a mounting block but this could have been achieved by machining a groove across the extrusion directly too.

Plenty of adjustment to ensure it's perfectly aligned and it's very rigid. Doesn't move and I can even sit on it without issue.
That said, it did take the whole afternoon to put together and i'd have gone with the off the shelf Felder option if it were available. Not sure the Felder would be better though to be honest.
Cheers, Dom

very nice. I wanted to do similar thing but my Felder has the fence cantilevered off the end of the bed which makes any extension troublesome - its possible just time consuming.

Great job! I did something similar for both ends of my spindle moulder since I was running 4.2m skirting board stock The slots can be a problem in that application.
I now have two Felder tables (with a Felder combo in between them). The Felder F rail system (flat bar) works very well, and I have added shop made coupling bars to my bandsaw and router table as well. It's all part of the service here at The House of Pain™

Yeah, I am using the Felder F bars (easily made but I didn't have the aligning washers and figured buying them was less effort overall) but couldn't wait 2 months for the 1m extension - pretty sure this is very similar to the Felder in any case with maybe a bit more adjustment and a bit more robust/heavy than the Felder.

Looking good, Dom. Nice and simple, and over-engineered.
Only niggle is whether that single leg will prove sufficiently stable and robust in use???

It will be stable enough because the rail mounting isn’t single point, but more to the point, the extension is clamped to the F rail, so the leg just has to support the end. Same as the Felder and Aigner units.
My own shop-made extensions are single leg at 1.5m long and they are plenty stable.
I have a couple of Felder cast iron extensions that cantilever out unsupported and they too are stable. I think they may only be 450 long though. It's all part of the service here at The House of Pain™

Exactly. I can push fairly hard left/right at the extreme leg end and don't get any discernable movement - seems plenty stable. I can basically sit on the end and there's no wobble or issue.
I also have a Felder 500mm cantilevered extension and it, like you say, is also very stable - it does, however have some flex if you push down on it (as you'd expect).
Cheers,
Dom

I have the aluminium extension for the A3-31, and it is very solid. No appreciable movement ...
I do not use it here anymore, but have it instead on the K3 slider ...
I was thinking of building something similar to your extension as a parallel guide for the K3. I like the way you have constructed the connection to the machine. In the end, using the same aluminium extrusion as you used, I build brackets. They are not nearly as elegant as your connection - and perhaps I will revisit this in the future, but the parallel guide is pretty solid. The key was adding a "prop" underneath to resist any downward deflection ...
This info is really for others who are seeking a similar construction. Thanks for yours - tucked away.

Thanks Derek,
Nice work. I also have a shorter extension for the infeed - figuring I don't want to have to re-level to adjust the depth of cut.

Also, suprisingly the outfeed weight is just on 12kg! That extrusion is heavy stuff.

Just to finish this one - both extensions are now fitted, machine has been adjusted and it's finally ready to be put to proper work. 3.3m long dining table is first order of business provided the customer gives me the go-ahead/deposit. Hopefully with this setup it'll go ok.

Looks great Dom.
I would love to have the 2 feed speeds on my small jointer/planer (Hammer A3-31), being able to run it a bit slower at times would be very handy.

Thanks mate. What is the feed speed on the A3-31? The Jet JPT310HH I upgraded from had a 6ft/min feed speed only and I often wished for a faster speed when doing a lot of work. But the slower speed gives a slightly getter finish. Two speeds is definitely a great thing.

Starting work on the table I had to get this machine and extension for. I'm already very glad i made the extension. Still hard work jointing 3.5m x 250mm x 50mm white oak but the extensions make it doable and are working out very well indeed.
